Interview with Spencer Withey
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: From a young age, I embarked on my journey in music production, starting with GarageBand and an old USB Logitech microphone to create my own demos. This early practice laid the foundation for my ongoing use of Logic Pro X, which remains an integral part of my production process today. At the age of fifteen, I pursued Music Technology A-Level, gaining access to an exceptional studio within my college. This invaluable experience allowed me to advance my skills in signal flow, microphone techniques, recording workflow, and mixing. Continuing my studies at ACM in Guildford, I had the opportunity to work as a live sound technician at various music venues. This role provided me with hands-on experience mixing for touring artists such as John Newman, Gaz Coombes, Kate Nash, and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. After completing my degree, I pursued a one-year Masters (MA) course in Record Production in West London. Throughout the program, I had unlimited access to excellent studios, enabling me to record and produce projects such as an album with Kipper Gillespie, an EP with Doops, and a diverse range of other works. Following my university studies, I had the privilege of assisting esteemed producers Ian Davenport (Supergrass, Gaz Coombes, Slowdive, etc.) and Ben Hillier (Nadine Shah, Blur, Depeche Mode). This invaluable experience allowed me to acquire invaluable lessons and techniques in record production. Recently, I have launched my own production, mixing, and mastering business, catering to a growing number of clients. I am excited to expand my venture further and continue delivering high-quality services.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: My primary focus lies in working on indie and alternative rock projects, where I strive to capture an edgy sound infused with a vintage feel. While I don't specialise in EDM genres, I possess the ability to apply my rock-oriented sound to create a captivating blend of genres across any project I undertake. This allows me to bring a unique and compelling perspective to every musical endeavor.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I run my project studio from a dedicated room in Brighton, which has been acoustically treated to facilitate optimal mixing, production, and mastering using my reliable Yamaha NS10m speakers. When it comes to recording projects involving drums or bands, I typically utilise a rented studio, reserving my personal space primarily for post-production and mixing purposes.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The majority of my client work is conducted remotely, utilising file sharing for efficient and practical collaboration in mixing, mastering, and audio editing revisions. This modern approach has proven to be highly effective in streamlining the workflow.
