I worked with Jon on an additional song called “Control” which showcased his musical versatility as the song itself had a more moody, trap-infused vibe and the song we worked on previously having been extremely folksy-bubblegum-popish. The collaboration was very easy and I enjoyed the process.

Interview with Jon Worthy

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: Creating. Any time I get to sing, produce, write a song, it's fun for me. Any form of musical creation is what I love to do!

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: I am adding a human touch to your song. Allow that to shine through. Each vocalist, songwriter, producer has their own vibe and by choosing a specific person to work with, you should allow that person to put their own flavor on a song in order to get the best result.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: What exactly they are looking for? What is this song intended for? What is your deadline? Do you have specific requests?

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Be transparent and very detailed. Tell me exactly what you are looking for. The more details I have the easier it is for me to execute what you are looking for. Be open to allowing me to try things that bring out my strengths. Whenever you hire someone you are hiring them for their strengths and experience. I am not a robot and most likely won't make something sound exactly as you imagined, but it will be unique and I will do my best to make it as perfect for your project as possible

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I am currently in 3 bands. I am the lead singer in two of them. I tour all around the country playing shows including festivals. I write and produce music for tv/film. I write/produce music for various artists. I do vocals for various artists. I have been doing music full time professionally for 8 years now!

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: Passionate, honest, emotional, fun upbeat. I like to describe my artist project as if Nirvana had a baby with The Lumineers.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: Jack Antenoff. Jack Antenoff works with so many cool artists and his songs are always so good. I love the different organic sounds he adds to his songs. He plays a lot of the parts of his songs on actual instruments which is something I always strive to do.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Go with your instinct. There are so many ways to go about producing. There is no single correct way to do anything. Often times, the coolest results come from trial and error. Experiment and go with what your instinct says.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: My artist songs are very passionate, emotional, high energy, upbeat songs. I like to think I bring that to any project I work on whether it be vocals, songwriting, or production. I bring my years of professional experience as a vocalist, songwriter, producer to a project and know what is being sought after. I have written hundreds of songs for sync and know what type of song and quality of song is needed. I have collaborated with a plethora of artist and love the process of combining different skillsets. I am super comfortable working with other people in collaboration.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: When working with a client, I like to get as much detail as possible from the client in order to know what is being sought after. Is it ok if I add a little bit of my style to the vocal delivery? What type of sounds are you looking for within the production? Are there certain songs you have in mind that you want the song to sound like. Once we are on the same page as far as the details go I start recording and send constant updates as I progress on the song. I love honest feedback as that's the only way we can get the best possible product for you.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: Universal Audio twin interface I have a 12 channel Roland studio capture interface. I have a scarlett focusrite 2 channel interface. I have a shure sm7b mic I have an AKG C214 mic I have a drum kit that I record with SM57's, a 52, and AT2020's I have a Gibson Es 335 guitar I have an American stratocaster guitar I have a Martin road series acoustic guitar I have a Takimine dreadnought acoustic guitar I have a mini korg synth I have a Casio 64 key keyboard with midi Soundtoys plugins Melodyne Auto Tune Universal Audio plugins Spitfire Komplete Kontrol Superior Drummer

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: I am primarily a vocalist, songwriter, producer, and guitarist. My vocal performance could include writing melodies, lyrics, toplining, singing melodies or lyrics that have already been written and essentially any vocal need you have for your song. I like to add some of my original style to a song if possible as that usually leads to the best result. I have a distinct powerful rasp to my voice along the lines of Tom Petty, Kings of Leon, The Struts, and Cage the Elephant. I work fast and keep in constant communication to make sure we are on the same page and going in the right direction. I am also a songwriter and producer. My song Help Me that I wrote, sang, and performed was recently on the Netflix show Twenty Something's. I can write and produce a song from scratch, take a basic idea and produce it out, or take a well formed demo and polish it in to a commercial ready song. I have written over 500 songs and have received National radio play, dozens of sync placements, and millions of streams on various streaming platforms. I like to play guitars through amps and record them as opposed to "in the box". I love soundscaping with synths and pads and various drum sounds. I also play the bass. My songwriting and production is unique and always ready for commercial release. I strive to have a unique sound, but with the highest quality one can offer. I am also an artist so I know what it takes to release music and the quality that is expected.

  25. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  26. A: My song Help me was recently placed on the Netflix show Twenty Something's Austin! I am the songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist.

  27. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  28. A: Producing and singing vocals for other artists, writing and producing my won music, making music videos, touring!

  29. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  30. A: Yes.

  31. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  32. A: Both! I play a lot of the parts with an actual guitar, keyboard, amp, etc. You can't replace the sounds of the actual instrument. But I also love using various sounds and plugins to enhance the song. I think a great producer finds a balance between the two.

  33. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  34. A: I will bring my vibe and my unique sound. I will keep you constantly updated on the progress of the song. I will keep working on it until you are happy. I won't tell you I can do something that I know I can't.

  35. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  36. A: Does your voice fit my track. Let's do a quick demo and see!

  37. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  38. A: Guitar, drums, interface, bass, keyboard.

  39. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  40. A: All genres. Mostly indie pop, alt rock, indie rock, alt country, singer songwriter, hip hop.

  41. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  42. A: Besides the actual skills of singing, songwriting, producing, I would say my strongest skill is my instinct. I know what sounds cool. When I sing/play something, I know right away if that's a good sound for a song and if other people will like it.

  43. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  44. A: Jack Antenoff. Mark Ronson. Maggie Rogers. The Districts. Miley Cyrus. Pearl Jam. The Beatles. Nirvana. Cage the Elephant.
