Evie Balfe on SoundBetter

Professional BBC radio supported artist & touring backing vocalist.

With 10 years of experience performing and writing, I pride myself on bringing emotion to my performances. I love collaborating and working with other creatives to make something amazing. All vocals are recorded in my home studio.

I write ethereal indie pop music influenced by the likes of London Grammar and Lorde. However vocally I love to perform Indie, Pop and Folk. I have a strong belt up to a C#5 and can mix powerfully above that. I can also create smooth, ethereal breathy vocals and percussive textures and am always up for the challenge and the opportunity to experiment with what my voice can do. I write all my own music which is regularly supported by BBC introducing and well known blogs such as Women of Music Business, Vents Magazine, Get In Her Ears and Le Future Wave.

As well as performing as a solo artist, I am also the lead singer of the three piece electronic indie band Paint Factory and one half of the function and backing vocal duo, Saint Eve. I have performed as a regular backing vocalist for the artists Martin Luke Brown and Nick Wilson, including performances at Sofar Sounds, The Garage London, Omeara London and on the Saint Raymond 2019 UK tour.

I have a first class honours degree in vocals from the British and Irish Modern Music Institute and am a certified MVT (Modern Vocal Training) vocal coach.

Second song recorded by Evie and another incredible performance in the first take. Professionally delivered stems, with main, harmonies and more. Her vocals get all songs to an incredible high level. Second, but sure not last collab if she's up to it.

Evie's voice is out of this world, I envisioned a song somewhere between Kate Bush and FKA twigs as ideal range of sound, not only she got there, she went beyond as her sound is unique. I'm so happy with the results and thankful for her voice in this project. She's a very gifted, fantastic singer.

Evie did backing vocals on my most recent project. The vocal lines were complex and required her to blend with a variety of different vocal styles and voice types. She was extremely reliable, always learnt her parts before the sessions, and was an active and creative member of the group during rehearsals. Her positive energy and considerate, professional nature make her a pleasure to work with. Thanks for your work Evie!

Evie has the ability to work a topline into any genre of music. With her powerful, naturally compressed belt, she can blast through loud sections while still managing to be intimate and delegate with her delivery to other tracks.

Evie is a brilliant Top liner! She has the amazing ability to turn a good track into a great one, not only with a great voice, but also with her creative flair. She provided vocals and lyrics for several of my projects, and I couldn't have asked for a better result! I will always recommend her to others.

Interview with Evie Balfe

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Honestly I have loved all the projects I have worked on, but writing and performing my own solo music will always make me feel proud. It takes a lot of courage and heart to put out your musical baby into the world.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am working on my next single, 'Grow'.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Alex Balfe. My brother is a fantastic songwriter.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. I can't choose! There is something more exciting about analog though.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to listen to you, communicate with you, deliver an emotive performance and have fun doing so with you.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The variety of projects I get to work on and the variety of incredible creatives I get the pleasure of meeting. Also the pure joy that singing gives me!

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That it's not a real job. I hate this question... Person: 'What do you do?' Me: 'I'm a musician and vocalist' Person: 'But what do you do for money?' Me: ....music!

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: I always ask for reference tracks and three words to describe the sound they are looking to achieve. I will also ask whether they would like me to stick exactly to a brief or if they would like me to experiment.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Look for someone who is going to make the creative process fun and rewarding for you because above all music should be enjoyable.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Oooh I love this question. As a vocalist, really all I need is me, myself and I. However I would definitely take my mac and Logic X, my interface, my Shure SM58 microphone and my Korg Minilogue to create those smooth synth sounds.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I have been performing and writing my own music for 10 years. I started out in musical theatre and then branched into the music industry. I studied vocals and creative musicianship at The British and Irish Modern Music Institute where I met the other members of my band, Paint Factory. I have been a professional backing vocalist for three years and a published artist for two years.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: My style is indie pop.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: I would love to work with Hayley Williams. I think her voice is incredibly varied. She masters soft vocals along with powerful belts and percussive textures while creating interesting melodies.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Don't be afraid to play with your music and deteriorate from what it sounds like in your head. Sometimes the improvised ideas or sounds you least expected to use and work help to create magic.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I usually work on Indie Pop music.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: As a certified vocal coach, my knowledge of the voice is strong. Therefore my vocal ability is my strongest skill followed by my ability to create catchy top lines.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I am a vocal chameleon and can tailor my voice to a variety of songs. I love to experiment with my voice and therefore I can bring more alternative melodies and textures to a song. However first and foremost, I think music needs to speak to people and engage with them emotionally. Therefore I strip my performances back to the most human emotional level possible and use the lyrics to tell a story.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: My work process varies per project. If I am recording vocals for a client, I like to get a detailed specification from them about what sort of vocal sound they are hoping to achieve and use my vocal knowledge to achieve that. Whereas when I am writing a top line I will get a specification and then create a few ideas through improvisation and then work with the client to develop their preferred idea.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I record all my vocals from my home studio made up of Logic X, Shure SM58, Focusrite interface and vocal booth.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I am inspired by a wide variety of musicians including London Grammar, Dua Lipa, Hayley Williams and Lianne La Havas.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Most of my work encompasses main and backing vocals for clients as well as creating top lines.
