Interview with Jack Hymers
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I worked with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra on a musical called U.Me, my role was orchestral arrangement programmer. You can listen on BBC Sounds or Spotify.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My nan took me and my cousin to a toy store when I was around 7 and said to us 'pick one toy'...I had no hesitation in going straight to the keyboard section. I then joined my first band at the age of 14 and music has been my full-time job ever since that day. I spend my entire life either on tour or in the studio.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, Ariana Grande, Thundercat or Tyler The Creator because I love the style and sound they create.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: OTT by Xfer. Also, For the perfect 'clap'... Go into Apple Loops and find 'Almost Reverse Topper' and single out the clap sound...It gives the mix an added high end punch that I just love!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Soundtracks with both orchestral and electronic elements. I also work on pop music for artists releasing singles and albums.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Communicating with the artist/client closely and coming out with ideas that most compliment the story.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Sit down with a coffee, and play piano whilst listening to the reference tracks that the client has sent. When an idea is firmly planted in my mind, I press record and the orchestration begins.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Currently using EastWest Composer Cloud X and Spectrasonics' Keyscape to achieve the hyper-realistic sounds of the Hollywood Orchestra, Yamaha C7 Grand Piano, LA Custom Rhodes, Wurlitzer 200A, Clavinet C and more. I use a Nord Electro 4D for Hammond Organ sounds. In the retro synths frontier, I am currently rocking a Prophet Rev 2, Jupiter 8, Juno 106, Juno 60, Serum & more.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, Bruno Mars, Ariana Grande, Thundercat, Tyler The Creator, Chaka Khan, Deadmau5...the list is endless.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I compose music for film, TV, game and trailers. I also record keys parts for artists' singles or albums.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Dave Ormsby - Drums Andreas Voie Juliebø - Drums Jesse Eigen - Bass AM0k - Producer
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog for sound, digital for reliability.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Don't be afraid to make notes and critiques on ideas that people send you until you get the perfect take! If you feel there's something that can be improved, if you want adjustments or have any ideas, we would love to work closely with you to achieve the perfect take.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Prophet 5, Wurlitzer 200A, LA Custom Rhodes, Clavinet C6 and a wah pedal.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Poppy, jazzy, funky.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Communicative collaboration, a vast range of playing styles and sounds that can be vastly altered to achieve the perfect keys track for your song.
