I f*cking hate bios.
But I love hard hitting drums - saturated yet precise. I love the way a perfect bass tone wraps itself around you - like your father’s missing approval. And singers - a song isn’t a song without vocals, amiright?
I believe in happy accidents and beautiful imperfection. I believe there may not always be a roadmap, but sometimes the best gifts come to us when we travel off-path. I love when opposites attract to create something completely amazing.
I hate selling myself to people, it feels creepy and inauthentic. But let’s be honest… you’ve got unfinished songs that need some special treatment and I’d like to help you complete these ideas!
I've had the pleasure to work with some amazing artists over the years including Phantogram, Machine Gun Kelly, The Aces, Foster The People, Chromeo, and JuiceWRLD to name a few. I'm passionate about exploring the human condition through writing songs. Drop me a message to find out more about I can help you hit the home stretch on your project!

Interview with Matty J (Matt Jacobson
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I absolutely loved working on the Phantogram album "Ceremony". I was a big fan of them before every meeting or working with them. I was introduced to them on a session at Paramount Recording, and they reached out a few months later to bring me on as their recording engineer. We worked at their studio as well as Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree, CA. As the project continued I wound up vocal producing the project as well. It was a true blessing to be able to work with such talented musicians that I respect and appreciate. Definitely on the top of my list of favorite experiences.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I am very happy with the digital realm. There is so much you can do with plugins and DAW, but sometimes there's something about a little extra analog grit that ties everything together. I prefer to record through analog gear, mix in digital, and have someone master the record analog.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to ensure the artists I work with leave happy and come back hungry. I want returning artists. I want them to be so ecstatic with their project that they bring their friends to work with me.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Started writing and playing music as a teenager, played in bands throughout college, went back to recording school to learn the discipline stronger. I graduated from LA Recording School in 2013, interned at Electric Feel Management, and became a runner at Paramount Recording Studios in Los Angeles in 2014. I have had the pleasure of working with many different artists some big and some small.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: A Beautiful Collision. I like to combine genres, or mix digital with analog instruments.. I like happy sounding songs that have sad, heavy, or meaningful lyrics that make you think. I'd describe my style as an aggressive, yet tight rhythm section, vocals sitting perfectly on top of the mix crisp and clear. Pop forward, with the aggression of a rock song.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I think that the biggest music production tip I could share that would be of value is to listen to what the artist wants and is actually saying. So many times, artists have told me that the last producer they worked with wasn't actually hearing what they were saying and had predetermined thoughts of how they think it SHOULD be, not how the artist actually WANTS it to be.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I'd like to think I bring a more chiseled version of what the song could be like. I like an aggressive, yet tight rhythm section. I like everything to sit in its place in the mix, yet be featured in a way where it doesn't go unnoticed
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: For me, it's all about the artist! I like to start by checking in with how the artist feels, catch up, and feel more relaxed and open for a good session. I like to work at the artists' pace and get to know the artist before I start directing the artist to do anything
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I currently work at Left Coast Recording Studio in North Hollywood, CA. I've got a couple drum kits (with snare options!) several guitars and basses to choose from as well as great microphones and preamps to capture the sound.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I am a vocal producer, recording engineer, mixing & mastering engineer, and song arranger. I work with artists in all stages of the music process, whether you have a track you need mixed, you're looking to record vocals, or you want to work together create a new song from scratch.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill, I believe, is creating a comfortable environment to create in. But in relation to music, helping the artist get the proper emotional performance needed for the song.
