Curtis is the first engineer I have worked with, and he’s got a client for life. His attention to detail, and ability to capture the energy of a song is unparalleled. He ensures the end product is exactly what you are looking for. He’s extremely prompt in responding to questions, and always keeps you updated on your tracks progress. He is very receptive to requests, and makes sure he implements them in the way you envisioned. As someone who’s attempted to mix and master their own work for years, I wish I would have done this sooner ! Hands down a five star experience every time.

I’ve been through a lot of engineers, and Curtis is the best. He is one of the truest, honest, and talented men I know. He is constantly pushing himself to learn new techniques and grow at a rate that is not comparable to anyone else. Will record and work with him as long as I have a voice. 10/10

Curtis was the first engineer i had worked with. The first experience i had with him was nothing less than perfect. He is very professional in his line of work and is a perfectionist when it comes to the most minimal things, which is what you want when someone has your song in their hands. More than a year later, i am still here working with him and he has delivered excellent tracks EVERY TIME. I trust curtis with all my music and would put him against any engineer. I would recommend Curtis to any artist looking to level up and get their song sounding radio ready. 🤘🏼

Easily without a doubt the most talented and humble musician I’ve ever gotten to work with, a no slack attitude yet willing to take quality time in ensuring that the artist is working at a comfortable pace. Legendary by all means, and a great human being. It’s Worth every penny and every second that gets spent at Mez

I have had the opportunity to work with Curtis on an older project that I wanted to make new. I met with him and he analyzed my song and pointed out things that could really help it sonically. I felt confident in his attention to detail and being open to my feedback, which really helped the overall process. The song turned out to be great and I look forward to getting future projects mix and mastered by this guy here. Curtis really knows his stuff!!!

Interview with Curtis Igunbor(Mez Records)

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I remember recording and mixing an artist J.Saenz single "Bad Timing". We worked on the song at 2AM when we were about to get ready to go to sleep. We found the momentum and finished the record in a few hours. After he released the single it generated nearly 20,000 streams in few weeks.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Mixing and mastering clients EP's and albums at the moment.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Nobody I know

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Analog for sure. There is something 3-D about it that digital doesn't touch. Digital is getting pretty close though.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to always put my 110% in every mix that I do.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love to blend sound frequencies and create the best sound to execute the artists vision.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: What is the turnaround for my mixed record? Between 48-72 hours.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That Mixing engineers can fix any problem within a mix. Very untrue because if the tracking has bad clipping then some things can't be fixed.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What are your influences? What color would you describe yourself as? What made you start to pursue this musical journey?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: I advise to have the overall mix peaking at around -10 if you are sending a mix with a 2-track instrumental. I also love when clients send me stems that are properly labeled. Save a bunch of time trust me.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: 1176,BAE 1073,Apollo X6,WA-251,Manley Core

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I starting recording, mixing and mastering 10+ years ago now. I was a senior in high school when I was first introduced to Protools. Literally everyday since I have been working in Protools to perfect my craft. I went on to college and have a B.A. in Music Business. College taught me a lot about myself and also how to work with musicians for sure. After graduation I moved to Austin,TX to further enhance my journey in 2017. I have been meeting and working with very talented artists ever since. The journey just keeps getting sweeter

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Young soul with a touch of a vintage vibe. I love modern sounding stuff and the new way of mixing music with plugins. At the same time you can't beat that analog feel when you turn real knobs. I geek out every time.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Blu for sure he's my favorite artist of all time. I love how he pieces his words together and forges a beautiful story. I can literally see what he is saying.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Gain staging is literally everything. Most 2-tracks that I receive are already mastered so I like to bring it down to peak around -10. That gives enough headroom to start tracking and mixing for me. Also helps during the mastering process for sure.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Hip-Hop & R&B

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Listening for sure. The ear is everything in my field whether it be to perfect a mix or listening to my clients needs.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I love to bring artists ideas and emotions upfront via frequency shifting. Depending on the song vibe I love to choose either the right mic,pre amp or compressor to color the signal.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I utilize 3 microphones when tracking. WA-251,Mojave 201 FET & WA-47. I usually choose a microphone depending on the voice of the artist and also on the vibe of the song. I use Universal Audio Apollo X6 as my converters for pristine clarity during mixing. I also love to run my clients stems through my analog hardware. I would say my approach is hybrid with incorporating digital and analog throughout the process.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a bunch of analog compressors,EQ's and pre amps that I love to use during tracking and also during mixing. My Apollo X6 is the spine of my studio with top notch conversion.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Nas,Blu,JAY-Z,Miles Davis,Young Guru,Andrew Scheps,Tony Maserati,Greg Wells,Josh Gudwin

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Recording, mixing and mastering clients singles or projects.
