Interview with Javier Valdeavellano
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Gian Marco’s album Intuición. I was the chief engineer at KC Porter’s studio, and both KC and Gian Marco liked my rough mixes so much they asked me to mix the entire album. It was a huge vote of confidence and a turning point in my career.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Wrapping up mixes for Panteón Rococó’s 30th anniversary album, which I also had the honor of co-producing alongside KC Porter. A milestone project with deep heart and energy.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Axe Follin, he's an amazing producer from Argentina: https://soundbetter.com/profiles/10927-axefollin
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital—it offers more precision, flexibility, and consistency. I love using analog gear for certain vibes, but digital gives me the control and efficiency I need.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise unlimited revisions, fast turnarounds, and mixes that are radio-ready—until you’re completely satisfied with the final result.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love the process of taking a track from almost there to done, and seeing it ready to connect with an audience. It’s the ultimate creative satisfaction.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Most clients ask about budget. I let them know I offer flexible options depending on the scope of the project—but I always aim to deliver top-tier, release-ready results that are worth the investment.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That mixing is just about balancing faders—it’s about shaping emotion and creating a mix that serves the song, not just the technical elements. Oh, and mixing is not the same as DJ-ing!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask about their vision for the track, reference songs, and the emotional feel they want in the final mix. I also like to understand their artistic journey and how this song/album fits into it.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for someone who understands your vision and can bring it to life—check their experience, flexibility, and willingness to collaborate.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: 1–MacBook Pro M2, 2–RME ADI ProFS, 3–Audeze Headphones, 4–Portable solar power generator, 5–Starlink Mini
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been working in music for over 14 years, starting as a producer and evolving into mixing 8 years ago. I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with Grammy-winning producers like KC Porter.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is dynamic and emotional, with a focus on making every mix feel powerful, balanced, and true to the artist’s vision.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Paul McCartney. He’s a living legend, and honestly, I can’t think of anyone bigger. The chance to contribute to his legacy would be surreal.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Focus on the song first—a great mix starts with a solid foundation, so make sure your song's structure and melodic contrast are tight before worrying about details.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Music that’s crafted to hit emotionally—with dopamine-triggering hooks, punchy grooves, and contrasting vibes that keep listeners coming back.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Spotting energy or movement monotony and enhancing emotional contrast across sections to keep the listener engaged from start to finish.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a producer’s ear to mixing—creating tracks that aren’t just balanced but emotionally impactful and ready for radio.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start with a pre-mix consult to align on vision, followed by mixing with unlimited revisions and fast turnarounds to fine-tune until the track is perfect.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work inside the box with Pro Tools, ensuring precision and flexibility. My monitoring setup includes ProAc Studio 100 monitors powered by a Bryston 4B-ST amp—the same combo used by top engineers like Serban Ghenea, Mark "Spike" Stent, and Michael Brauer for their world-class mixes.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: KC Porter and engineers like Serban Ghenea, Tchad Blake, Michael Brauer, Jaycen Joshua, and Al Schmitt. Their ability to shape emotion through sound is a constant source of inspiration.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I provide remote mixing, focusing on making tracks release-ready with a fast turnaround, unlimited revisions, and personalized consultations to nail that final 5%.
