Interview with Mitchel Dae

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I just released a song with Israeli Producer/ DJ Jack Shore called "In Your Light". I'm super proud of that song because it stretched me both as a vocalist and songwriter. Prior to working with Jack on this song, I hadn't had much experience with music in the Sythwave genre before. Working it taught me how to let go of my own fears and expectations while navigating unfamiliar territory and just enjoy the process!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I have a lot of collaborations at the moment with producers in the EDM realm! I'm also working on putting out my own EP! I'm reaaalllllyyy digging it so far and am excited to release it to the world!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Absolutely! My good friend Dan Knittel is an amazing producer and Mixing & Mastering Engineer! You should totally check him out and work with him on anything you need help with!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I personally love digital. I don't have the patience to learn analog gear (although I wish I did). Digital also lends itself really well to my mobile lifestyle!

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise that I will work my absolute hardest to help capture the vision that you had set out to acquire when creating your song!

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love the ability to flex creative muscles. I love that everything around me has the potential to be harnessed into some sort of creative inspiration. It's my job to take my environment and interactions with that environment and convert them into art!

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Clients will often send me a reference and ask if I can capture the overall vibe of that reference. My answer to them is usually something like: "HECK YEAH! BRING IT ON!"

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: People often think that because I'm a songwriter, that I love to write with other people. It's quite the contrary. I see songwriting as a deeply personal activity and exercise for me, so I really enjoy writing lyrics alone!

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: -What emotions are you trying to capture with your song? -Who are you making this song for? -Where will this song reach it's fullest potential

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: I would say to look extensively at their previous work to and compare it to what you are looking to have done on your work. If there are elements or characteristics that you admire from their previous work, it may mean that they are the right provider for you to work with!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: I would take: 1) My guitar (it's a big part of my writing process) 2) A pen and pad 3) A voice recorder 4) A comfy chair 5) A satellite phone so I could call someone to come get me after I write a sick song!

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: When I was in college, I thought I was going to be a lawyer. During my Junior year, I suddenly became obsessed with songwriting and began skipping class to write crappy songs all day. As time went on, my songs started to suck a little less and I moved to a new city to work with a producer upon graduating. That's when I started experimenting with production and recording myself. Years later, I have gotten to work with some pretty cool people and have built an audience for my music! I've been doing this for a total of 5 years now.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Moody with a chance of fun!

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Jon Bellion. I am a huge admirer of not only his production ability, but how vivid his songwriting is. I feel like he is someone who has truly captured the essence of what it means to truly be free in music creation, and it's very clear that he loves what he does!

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Don't take yourself too seriously. We often waste a lot of creative energy when we overthink elements in our production. Use your non-creative time to hone your craft, so that you are not wasting creative energy on navigating technical elements of production. You want to get to a place where you are free to create with a sense of fluidity!

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on pop songs, singer-songwriter songs, and EDM songs!

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is by ability to construct memorable melodies that grab the listener and convey the message of the lyrical content.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I feel that I bring a fresh voice and dynamic energy to the songs that I work on! I always give my best to the songs I agree to work on. If I feel like I cannot offer something beneficial to a song, I will politely pass on working on it. I never want to work on something with a sense of indifference. That's just not beneficial for anyone!

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Like I mentioned above, I like to keep moving. It's on the move that I feel most inspired and that my best ideas come to me. I will often find myself taking aimless drives for hours just to work through an idea that I have in my head. Once I feel that the idea has been somewhat formed, I will go into my studio, dig through any voice memos I've recorded on my phone, and begin working on them in Logic!

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I try to keep my studio very simple, yet functional. I am often bouncing around so it's very important that I have a setup that I can make mobile as well. With than being said, I run Logic Pro X off of my MacBook. I have a M-Audio MIDI keyboard for programming, and a Rode NT1-A that I run into a Scarlett 2i2 audio interface. This setup allows me to achieve a professional sound while keeping me inspired while I'm on the go!

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I have been a fan of John Mayer's dynamic writing style since I was young. Production wise, I am a very big fan of Zedd.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I love doing top-line work of all styles! I feel that my experience working in various genres has allowed me to expand my musical pallet and bring to life the vision of my clients. As of recently, I have found myself working extensively on various genres within EDM that utilize my roots as a singer-songwriter.
