Great experience working with Matti. He's clearly very passionate and committed about his music which shows through in the freshness of his ideas and approach - yet he was also happy to take advice which I found refreshing, and is an attitude which can only take him places. Look forward to working together again.

Interview with Matti Charlton

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Everything I put out on streaming I am proud of. I've linked my Spotify so take a listen.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Next album!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Dan Konopka and Rob Murray for mixing and mastering. These guys brought magic to my tracks.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I used to be hardcore about hardware, but now I'm all about the software. Bring the bits and sample rate high enough, and with quality plug-ins, software and the know-how to use them, you can do anything.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I want you to be happy - I bring the eccentrically beautiful to your project. I won't make a proposal without clients knowing that. I guarantee that you will get as much love for what I do for you as the work I do for myself. And for both, I'm all in.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: A single tear pools in the corner of the eye, and rolls slowly along the curve of the cheek where it hangs, suspended in time for a quiet gasp, and then plummets silently to crash to the ground in a silent splash. You read that? That's what I love about it. Bringing beauty and poetry, except instead of bringing it to words, I bring it to music.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Why are you so hands-on? I say, I've only got two...

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Love isn't easy. Love is hard. But it's the only way to do anything. Do not half the ass. Or the ass will halve you.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Do you want to make something different that is unique and beautiful?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: If you want different, here it is. Trust me. I make the different outstanding. As a transgender artist, if you are a member of the transgender community then contact me for special prices. The same goes for LGBTQ+ projects, or anything anti-racism, pro-diversity, feminist, anti-TERF. I proudly will charge less for projects that move our society FORWARD! Past these dark days!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: 1. Mac book pro 16" 2. USB controller keyboard with integrated audio interface 3. Noise cancelling waterproof monitor headphones with integrated microphone. 4. A water-tight suitcase with integrated large durable solar panel array containing high mAh battery to power all of it And just in case those things fail 5. My classical guitar I'd have a new album in rough cut for every month they were still looking for me.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: 33 years.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Completely off the wall and eccentric. But delicious.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Oh I'd love to work with Digitalism or M83.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Don't overthink it. It's better to get it done and make mistakes than strive for perfect. Perfect comes with iteration.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: The kind that if you rub it, a genie appears. That genie is me. And I make magic happen.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Comprehensive. I have a battle chest of skills so large that spacetime folds in order for it to exist in our universe.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Color and diversity, something different and exciting.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Source dopamine and serotonin modification. Tap under normal circumstances. Just kidding. Inspiration is like a flow, a thermodynamic balance. Bring it to me, and out it comes. It's a spigot, never ending. No drugs necessary.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Second bedroom of my apartment is a treated monitor and recording room with acoustic panels of pyramid foam lining the walls. Instruments hang from hooks including an accordion, banjo, bass guitar, electric guitar, classical guitar, bongos, a didgeridoo. DTXplorer drum set in the corner. 5 foot high rack stand filled with gear (compressors, interfaces for audio and midi, RAID drives, mixer). 8 monitors across 6 computers soldier on the glass office table. Beside it is a three-tier keyboard stand with two Korg synths and a Roland weighted-key piano. Down the hallway is a large, fully lined and treated walk-in closet that is a proper vocal booth with an AKG mike.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Anyone making anything honest and who is beautiful being themselves. YOU can inspire me. I hope that you DO!

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Magic is science in the hands of a wonderchild.
