Josh Howard on SoundBetter

Hi i’m Josh, I am a musician, Song writer, teacher, and producer. I have been working in music since I was 16 and have never stopped. I have traveled a lot and learned from some amazing musicians and I want to bring my knowledge to you!

Ive worked professionally playing gigs as a musician for 15+ years now. I was 18 when I went on my first tour and began producing when i was 21. As a Producer I found that I have a natural amount of skill in seeing the best course of action for bringing the most attractive parts of a song to the front for the listener. I love making beats and tracks but more then that I love helping artists and song writers realize their artistic vision. I also have experience in producing and writing with Different kinds of artists. Being a producer is something i have found a natural amount of skill in. Seeing the best course of action for bringing the best parts of a song to the front for the listener is something that i really care about.

I record and make high quality tracks as a bass player but also multi instrumentalist and producer. I love communicating and following instructions, and delivering a high quality product fast.

Josh is hands-down the best bassist I've ever worked with, if not the best instrumentalist. I recently worked with his band on a record he produced, and he is a fantastic producer. Great musical mind, and couldn't be easier to work with. Straight up, Josh is a genius.

Interview with Josh Howard

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: only bass players sound like bass players on the bass

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: What your goals are for the project that i am going to work on? what kind of artists do you pull from?

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Do as much work as you can by yourself until you hit a wall. Then give me a call!

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: My bass, mark bass tube amp head, eden cab, quarter inch cable...and i guess an electricity generator so it could all work.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I started playing and studying when i was 15 but didn't start practicing a lot of hours and playing gigs till i was about 17. I then went to colleague and studied music business. I continued in College to play gigs and travel with different music groups. One semester i went to The Contemporary Music Center (CMC) in nashvillle in the artist program and learned a lot about recording and playing live with music that was more geared towards artistry. After i graduated college i moved to Knoxville TN where i have lived and traveled from since 2013.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Professionally i have played in a lot of different situations. I have spent a lot of time playing CCM and Gospel. I studied jazz and have played jazz for many years. I also love R&B, Hip-Hop, Electronic music, Rock and Bluegrass. And like most musicians these days i have also recorded with and played with a lot of singer songwriter/folk musicians.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: Most of my work comes from playing on an album. I will have meetings and talk about what they are thinking for different tracks and then i will send multiple different takes of the same song and go from there.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: I am able to see the good things and bad things in a song. Because of that i am able make informed suggestions and decisions in and out of the song to get the best possible result.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: Its different song to song. some of them i know exactly what I'm thinking but depending on the artist it is a different process.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: I am a music fan in general so i draw inspiration from a lot of different producers and musicians.
