HI :) I'm Josh Howard a bass player that lives in Knoxville TN. Music has been my career since i was in high school .I have done many recording projects and I would love to work on your project with you!

I am a professional bass player and producer and i also play music for a living. I originally went to school to study Jazz but grew up listening to a lot of Motown and funk. Two projects i am the most invested currently are an electronic project with a drum called Nox Yorc and a Fusion bands called New Radio Dialect. Besides those I CurrentIy play in a lot of different bands and do recording projects for a lot of different types of bands and artists. I love Hip Hop,Rap, Prog Rock, Jam bands, Americana and singer songwriter projects. I also have played in church all my life and love playing CCM and Gospel music.

Even though i like a lot of bass players some of my biggest bass inspiration for tone and playing are Michale League (snarky puppy), Pino Palladino(John mayer trio,D'angelo,Paul Simon,NIN, Wayne Krantz) and Thaddeus Tribbett (Tye Tribbett).

I also have experience in producing and writing with Different kinds of artists. Being a producer is something i have found a natural amount of skill in. Seeing the best course of action for bringing the best parts of a song to the front for the listener is something that i really care about.

Im looking forward to working with as many people as possible to make amazing music!

Josh is hands-down the best bassist I've ever worked with, if not the best instrumentalist. I recently worked with his band on a record he produced, and he is a fantastic producer. Great musical mind, and couldn't be easier to work with. Straight up, Josh is a genius.

Interview with Josh Howard

What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
only bass players sound like bass players on the bass
What questions do you ask prospective clients?
What your goals are for the project that i am going to work on? what kind of artists do you pull from?
What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
Do as much work as you can by yourself until you hit a wall. Then give me a call!
If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
My bass, mark bass tube amp head, eden cab, quarter inch cable...and i guess an electricity generator so it could all work.
What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
I started playing and studying when i was 15 but didn't start practicing a lot of hours and playing gigs till i was about 17. I then went to colleague and studied music business. I continued in College to play gigs and travel with different music groups. One semester i went to The Contemporary Music Center (CMC) in nashvillle in the artist program and learned a lot about recording and playing live with music that was more geared towards artistry. After i graduated college i moved to Knoxville TN where i have lived and traveled from since 2013.
What type of music do you usually work on?
Professionally i have played in a lot of different situations. I have spent a lot of time playing CCM and Gospel. I studied jazz and have played jazz for many years. I also love R&B, Hip-Hop, Electronic music, Rock and Bluegrass. And like most musicians these days i have also recorded with and played with a lot of singer songwriter/folk musicians.
What do you bring to a song?
I am able to see the good things and bad things in a song. Because of that i am able make informed suggestions and decisions in and out of the song to get the best possible result.
What's your typical work process?
Its different song to song. some of them i know exactly what I'm thinking but depending on the artist it is a different process.
What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
I am a music fan in general so i draw inspiration from a lot of different producers and musicians.
Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
Most of my work comes from playing on an album. I will have meetings and talk about what they are thinking for different tracks and then i will send multiple different takes of the same song and go from there.
