With a background in recording, performing, producing, composing, and arranging, EJ Rios brings an artist-first approach to creating polished, emotionally impactful mixes.
Began my musical journey wearing many hats — recording, performing, producing, composing, and mixing. Over the years, my focus has evolved, and I now specialize in bringing records to life through mixing.
Because I’ve worked on every side of the creative process, I understand what it feels like to have a vision for your song and trust someone else to translate that vision sonically. My goal is to deliver mixes that feel polished, emotional, and true to the artist’s intent.
Check out some of my work below, and let’s create something great together.

Interview with EJ Rios
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I especially enjoy working on music with my band and being involved in the songwriting process from start to finish. From performing and recording to producing and collaborating with other talented musicians, the creative process is what drives me most. Seeing an idea evolve from a rough concept into a finished record is something I’m especially proud of, and collaborating with passionate artists always pushes me to grow creatively.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now I’m continuing to sharpen my mixing workflow, work with independent artists across multiple genres, and focus on building records that translate competitively while still feeling emotional and authentic.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I’m always open to collaborating with talented people on the platform, especially writers, vocalists, and mastering engineers who genuinely care about the music and the artist experience.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital for flexibility and speed, but I still love the character and mindset that analog gear inspired. Modern digital tools allow incredible precision while still giving you the ability to create warmth, depth, and emotion when used correctly.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to treat every record with care and respect, communicate honestly, and work toward the best possible version of the song instead of rushing through the process. I want clients to feel heard and confident in the final product.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love helping artists hear their ideas come to life. There’s something special about taking a rough idea or unfinished song and turning it into something that emotionally connects and feels complete.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: One of the most common questions is, “Can you make this sound professional?” My answer is always that a strong mix can absolutely elevate a song, but the best results come from great performances and recordings working together with the mix. My job is to bring out the full potential of the record.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: A lot of people think mixing is just making things louder or adding plugins. In reality, mixing is about emotion, balance, and helping every part of a record support the song properly. Sometimes the best mix decisions are the subtle ones people never notice directly.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually ask what vision they have for the song, what artists or records inspire the sound they want, whether they have references, and what they feel is currently missing from the record. Understanding their goals helps me make decisions that actually serve the music.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Find someone who understands your vision and communicates well, not just someone with expensive gear or flashy credits. A good engineer should help your music feel more like you, not less. Chemistry and trust matter just as much as technical skill.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Hoping I can power it all. My MacBook Pro, UAD Apollo Interface, Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX Headphones, and my DW Kit
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started my music journey as a drummer in church before getting into recording so I could capture my performances for YouTube. That led me into audio engineering school at Mercy University, where I spent a lot of time around studio sessions, recording environments, and hands-on production work. Over the years I’ve worked in recording, producing, composing, and mixing, eventually developing a stronger focus on mixing and vocal production.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Clean, emotional, and modern. I like mixes that feel polished and commercial while still keeping the personality and imperfections that make a record feel human. I’m big on depth, vocal clarity, impactful low end, and creating a vibe that translates everywhere.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with artists like Drake, Khalid, or Lecrae because their music relies heavily on atmosphere, emotion, and vocal presentation. Those are the types of records where subtle details in the mix can completely change how a song feels.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don’t get so focused on making every track sound impressive by itself that you forget about the full song. A great mix is about balance and emotion, not just loudness or brightness. Sometimes removing elements or simplifying processing creates a much bigger sounding record.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work across multiple genres including hip-hop, R&B, melodic rap, pop, Christian music, and singer-songwriter records. While a lot of my background comes from vocal-driven music, I enjoy working on any song that has a strong emotion or message behind it.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is mixing vocals and creating space in a record without losing energy. I’m very focused on getting vocals to feel natural, emotional, and upfront while still blending into the production properly. I also pay close attention to how records translate across headphones, cars, speakers, and phones.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring perspective, emotion, and attention to detail. My goal is never to change the artist into something they are not, but to bring out the best version of what is already there. I focus heavily on clarity, depth, vocal presence, and making sure the song connects emotionally while still sounding competitive with commercial releases.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I usually start by listening to the rough mix and understanding the artist’s vision for the song. From there I organize and clean the session, balance levels, and build the mix around the emotion of the vocal and production. I constantly reference the energy and feel the artist wants rather than just chasing loudness. Once the mix is close, I fine-tune details, test the song across different systems, and work with the client through revisions until everything feels right.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work primarily in Pro Tools with a hybrid digital workflow focused on accuracy and translation across multiple listening environments. My setup is built around detailed vocal work, low-end balance, and commercial-level monitoring through studio monitors and headphones I know extremely well. I use a combination of industry-standard plugins and creative processing tools to shape records while keeping the artist’s vision front and center.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by engineers and producers who know how to make records feel emotional while still sounding huge. People like Jaycen Joshua, MixedByAli, Alex Tumay, Noah “40” Shebib, and Mike Dean have all influenced how I approach space, tone, and balance in a mix. I also draw inspiration from artists and musicians across different genres because great music always translates regardless of style.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mainly work on mixing and vocal production for artists looking for a polished, commercial sound while still keeping the emotion and character of the original record intact. A lot of my work involves shaping vocals so they sit naturally in the track, improving clarity, depth, low end, and overall impact. I also help artists with arrangement ideas, editing, and production feedback when needed.
