Interview with Casa Rara Studio Mastering
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Pablo Rabinovich.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been doing this for 10 years now. The good thing about this profession is that you always learn new things. Without counting that hearing is constantly evolving.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I really like to work with Massive Atack.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, Rock, Electroncia, Trap.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: The setup of my studio is based on always having different tools available. It is not a closed path, I am choosing what is best for each track and style of music. It's not the tools themselves that do great mastering, but the decisions that are made, based on what each song or album REALLY needs.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Massive Attack, Sufjan Stevens, GNR. Each style has its value and originality. I'm quite a fan of all music itself.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common job I do for my clients is mastering. Likewise, the first thing I do at the time of being hired is an advice on mastering mixes. Through a detailed listening I try to see objectively what problems there may be at the moment of mastering and there I suggest modifications.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog equipment offers a depth that digital equipment IMHO does not have. On the other hand, today's mastering tasks also requires digital tools. Likewise, the question does not go through whether the analog world is better than the digital one or vice versa. Just tools. It is the job of the mastering engineer to know which ones and when to use them.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I assure my clients a quality finished product, fluid communication so that their idea is reflected one hundred percent in the track to be mastered.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I like most about my job is having the chance to meet artists and new music, and to be able to polish their songs to the maximum. I just love what I do.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: The most common : Can we get it real loud? You can make a song louder but sacrificing dynamics. Also depending on who made the mix and the style of music. A topic always to chat and reach an agreement!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest mistake is to think that a good mastering saves a bad mix and a good mix saves a bad recording. They are three processes that work as a whole. One is not good if the others are bad or mediocre.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask them if they are really satisfied with the mix to start mastering. Otherwise, a mixing advice is done to ensure that the song arrives as balanced as possible.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice> Trust fully in my mastering services.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If I was on a desert island I would choose: 1- IBIS CRANE SONG DISCRETE CLASS A EQUALIZER>> A really transparent equalizer, we use it for both subtractive and additive EQ. Incredible COLOR function to give warmth to mixtures that require it. Again, David Hill surprises us. 2- BAX EQ>> Amazing musical EQ. Just Love it. 3- MYTEK CONVERTERS> Cristal clear. Extremely low jitter. Deep bass, enhanced stereo field. I would not change it for anything. 4- Elysia Xpressor - Elysia Nvelope> Extremely useful tools when it comes to mastering. I can not live without them. 5- DYNAUDIO SPEAKERS> After a long time of testing audio monitors these are my first choice. incredible design and sound quality!
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I was involved in a proyect called Employee of the Year (Vintrash). It was a very satisfactory experience, from working with the producer to being in the smallest detail when recommending modifications into the mix, so that the mastering would be as effective as possible.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently I am working on trap and pop songs.
