Working with Abe was great! First of all it started with a phone call. In that way he could really get to know me and what I am planning to do or what my vision for the song was.
He explained everything and I started understanding the process. After the phone call I was convinced, that Abe is the ideal mixer for this project. Today I got the end result and I can´t believe how well it turned out!! I am so happy, that I found my producer for the future!

Interview with Abe Stewart

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Recently I co-produced and mixed Michael Franti's new EP. They needed a producer/mixer to come in with a 'young fresh sound' and I was lucky enough to get the call.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Digital.

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: Less is more

  7. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  8. A: "How many revisions will you do?" That is a case by case answer. Ultimately we are gonna go until you are happy....but a 1db increase in the snare, on version 100 will not make or break the song. Overthinking is dangerous!

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: Is the production done? A mix does not fix poor production. Make sure you are set and happy with all the recording, editing and production. Mixing will elevate, not fix.

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: A seasoned, but youthful taste. I've put in my 10,000 hours, but I've also developed my flavor. I strive for a clean, loud, wide and warm mix. I know how to get there and I'm confident I can with your song.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: I work in a very modern way. All in the box with Logic. Probably have every plugin imaginable, but I do have my favorites. My room is very well tuned/treated and I actually work at a standing desk! Very weird for music people to wrap heads around, but being on a modern/simple setup, it allows those luxuries. I find you work faster and relax more when standing :)

  15. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  16. A: I will not cut corners. We will get it 'there'

  17. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  18. A: Helping an aritst's vision happen. Seriously, I LOVE the feeling when someone says 'its perfect.'

  19. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  20. A: That a poor recording/production will be 'fixed in the mix.'

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: One mixer is not equal to another and having ten different guys mix your song will result in very different versions. Find your guy and stick to him. I bring customer service, pop/modern techniques and vocal that will be loud, controlled and in your face. Let's give it a shot!

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: Imac Pro, Logic X, Townsend Labs mic, FabFilter, Plugin Alliance.

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: 10+ years. I grew up in a musical family of studio engineers. Basically started mixing at 2 years old haha.

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: Modern, clean, competitive.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Pop, HipHop, Electronic.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Mixing, Editing, Vocal Tune.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: First thing is to communicate with the artist. My vision is a reflection of them. Then, get the mix balance right, take breaks and be deliberate with decision making.

  35. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  36. A: Mixing, mixing and more mixing! :) I work heavily in the Pop (radio ready) space, Urban and Electronic world.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: Mixers: Serban Ghenea, Jaycen Joshua and Josh Gudwin.

  39. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  40. A: Adam Neilson or Blake Bunzel.
