Interview with Morten Remar
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I was the sole co-writer and sole producer and recording-engineer on Maria Montells internationally debutalbum, "And so the story goes" that became a major hit and a million seller abroad.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Another single for my solo-EP.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both - they contemplate each other.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: You won't be disappointed.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Creative freedom, creating stories out of words and sounds.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Have no idea :-)
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Have no fear. "It's only music" as Miles Davies told a young musician he was playing with.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My old acoustic guitar, drum kit, longdistance Wifi, my cellphone + Spotify app and a solarpanel.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been doing this for at least 30 years as a living.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Classic but open to new stuff and sounds.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Sufjan Stevens is an exciting artist that surprises you for every release.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Build your production up and around vocal and never forget the vibe from the original demo, that made you tic. Sometimes I work out from the demo and build upon that. It never fails.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Acoustick pop, melodic stuff, everything that catches my ear.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: That I am an songwriter myself and understand the complexity and the possibilities. I'll never stop before I am satisfied with the result.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Actually, it is the song that brings the vibe to my production. I try to support the song and bring it to the right place and amplify the message.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Very simple. Analog input, digitally processed, analog listening (my very experienced ears) UAD Apollo with DSP farms and UAS and Waves plugins, UAD LA-610 MkII analog preamplifier and compressor.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Everything, to be honest. From Beatles, Sufjan Stevens, Justin Bieber ... anything original, good sounding, that touches me emotionally.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Producing, recording, mix and mastering. It's a holistic venture. From start to end. Total control and easy to operate. No strings attached and lots of freedom in the proces.
