Co-Producer, Co-Writer, Co-Mixer, and Bassist on "Fascination" by "The Birthday Massacre." I love working with artists who are looking to push the envelope in their genre. I've worked a lot in the Alternative, Rock, Industrial, Goth, and Metal scenes and I see my musical tastes as fairly eclectic. I've also engineered numerous projects over 20 yrs.
Back in 2014, I built a recording studio called "Desolation Studios' so the bands I was involved in, "The Birthday Massacre" and " A Primitive Evolution" would have a place to produce, rehearse, record, and mix our albums. Here we are many years later and the studio has blossomed and I'm feeling ready to start working with artists and bands outside my own!
When I was younger I attended Music Industry Arts in London Ontario and since then I have filled my days with the hunt for tones and sounds that will impact and inspire audiences.
I'm a stompbox maniac, love running things through fuzz pedals, and enjoy long jam sessions in the creative cave I have built. So come join me for a project. We can work in person, or remotely, I'm easy!
My talent set lies in production, mixing, and songwriting but I have also been known to engineer and also master an album here and there. For years I recorded performers for various animated series as well so I'm quite familiar with working with talent and capturing magical moments with them.
And, if you're just looking for someone to tune your vocals with taste or edit some instrumentation while retaining musicality, heck I can do that too!
As a self-made artist, performer, and record producer, I've worn just about every hat that you can find in this weird tickle trunk so reach out and let's create something together.

Another great producing and mixing experience with Brett. He hit it out of the park and I was 100% satisfied with the final result. He made many creative contributions that took the song to the next level, while still remaining detached enough to let me be the tie-breaker where we differed—a “soft skill” that I really appreciate in working with Brett, in addition to his technical abilities.

Brett is the best! Went above and beyond when producing the track. He really understood the vision and direction I had in mind for the song, and he brought the track to a whole new level! Great with communication, and he absolutely nailed the final mix and master!

Brett is not just a highly talented and intuitive producer, but he's also a very down to Earth, personable guy and enjoyable to collaborate with. He has a wide range of tools, plug-ins, and sounds and is meticulous about finding what will best fit the song. I've also appreciated that he works quite efficiently. I'm excited to keep working on more projects with Brett.
Interview with Brett "Bat" Carruthers
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will care and do the best I can on your project
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I learn something every time I work
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Since I was around the age of 12 I've been trying to figure out how to write a great song and using computers to write and produce on. That led me to a Music Industry Arts at Fanshawe College. From there I moved to Toronto to pursue my career in music, that was around 2003 when I arrived. Spent a lot of time in the music scene building bands and then started recording other people's projects along the way.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Dirty Warm Punchy Cinematic, depends on what the song calls for
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't be afraid to get weird. Always try and go over the top first and then pull yourself back from there. Is that a production tip? Mix around your Vocal, Kick and Snare.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Alternative anything, Goth Rock, Industrial, Folk, Dark Pop, Electronic Music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: communication
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: emotion and insight.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Never ending. Lots of collaboration. I like to learn what the artist needs and draw it out of them with encouragement, constructive criticism, and teamwork creation.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Nothing too fancy. In the Front end a few 500 series pres and FET compressor, UAD Apollo with loads of plugs. Mixing mainly in the box these days. A decent selection of my ole faithful microphones. A ridiculous amount of guitar pedals and instruments.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: There are many! Lately, I've been hugely inspired by Mick Gordon, his work on video game soundtracks has broken new ground in the production of metal in my opinion. I love Chelsea Wolfe, I love the work of Trent Reznor as an artist and a producer. I've always admired Butch Vig and Alan Moulder and the amazing work they did together and on their own. Dave Ogilvie, Steve Albini, Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, Flood, Nigel Godrich, David Bottrill, Sylvia Massy, Joe Barresi, Nick Raskulinecz, and Randy Staub are just a quick list of producers and mixers I look up to.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly produce and mix for a variety of artists and projects.
