Nat truly is a master of his craft, going well beyond my high expectations! The 1-on-1 call was such a great way to make this track truly feel like a collaboration and not just paying for a service. Nat is a great guy and I will 100% work with him again in the future.

Great vocals and a great style. It was a pleasure to work with Nat.

Nat has a sharp discipline and great work ethic to his artistry. A true asset to this community. We conversed on the phone about the overall vision of the song and got to know one another a bit as well which I strongly believe is the best way to go about collaborating with creatives, particularly when the effort is being conducted over the internet as opposed to physically being in the same room. I highly recommend, he won't disappoint.

Nat is a true pro. He took the time to get to know me before we started on the project and understood my vision for the track. He is talented, he takes pride in his work, and his attention to detail is impressive. He went above and beyond for me and I'm extremely happy with the song we created.

Insanely good vocalist and lyricist for EDM style rap! I gave him the task of writing and recording vocals about something unusual. And after some further discussions he wrote and wrote some insanely cool lyrics along with recording equally as cool vocals! He was both professional but also makes you feel like a buddy of his at the same time, super super nice guy! And he got the task done well within the time frame and to a high standard!

Interview with Nat James
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I wrote vocals for an augmented reality music project for IBM, and the track was so beautifully experimental it allowed me to write a poetic masterpiece.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Building my artist management platform to serve other great vocalists!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I really love what DEVMO is doing. She truly loves her craft.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Beauty and the beast.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to offer a unique depth to your initial creative ideas, and a high quality vocal that will bring it to life.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Connecting with people. Creating something unique that speaks to listeners.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Do you want to be/have to be featured on the song release? Really it's your call. I may choose not to be featured if the track doesn't suit my audience.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: It's all a game of luck.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Where would you like to see this project featured when it goes public? What inspired you to make this?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Ask everything that's on your mind, and work with providers you trust and connect with.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A bible, knife, fishing gear, MacBook and a mic. Modern day disciple.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been working professionally as a vocalist for 7+ years. My career path is developing through live performance, vocal work and artist management.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Poetic yet punchy, deep yet fiery.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: MIME. Because he's not just a great musician, he's a good person.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Intentional expansion. Try moving your song ideas from a 'seed' to a 'shoot' as soon as they arise. You will thank yourself when you come back to the idea the next day.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Many electronic genres! Trap, House, and Bass/Dubstep.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Understanding the needs of others.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Energy, inspiration and a strong message.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Begin with the end in mind! I will confirm with each client what they want to see upon project completion and use this to direct the creative process - writing and recording. I run these in parallel in order to remain creative lyrically and with my vocal performance. I will export an initial demo for each client to listen through and offer feedback / amendments, and finalise the project by making those changes and mixing the vocals for export. Once client has confirmed a second demo, they release the project funding and I send the vocal stems.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a simple setup with a super clean acoustic space. A Shure SM7b routed into an Audient iD14, with all mixing done from my Yamaha HS7s in a professionally acoustically treated room.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I look towards heavyweight EDM vocalists like Virus Syndicate & MIME; vocalist that sound incredible at festivals and live performances.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I write super punchy rap vocals for electronic genres of all moods. I record and mix these vocals to an industry standard focusing on clean, workable audio with the client's project style in mind.
