Raymond R. on SoundBetter

I’m Raymond, a singer-songwriter and producer originally from Burbank, CA. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of performing as a backing vocalist for artists such as Pharrell Williams, Little Big Town, and Demi Lovato, with appearances on major stages including the American Music Awards, The Voice, and Jingle Ball.

Today, I run an independent songwriting and music design practice, where I collaborate with artists, filmmakers, and creatives to bring their sonic visions to life. My approach is deeply personal — when I take on a project, I treat it as my own. I believe that true collaboration means investing emotionally and creatively to ensure the final product sounds exactly as you imagined — or better.

I specialize in:

- Songwriting that speaks to the soul and sticks in your head

- Male vocals with character, clarity, and emotional punch

- Piano recordings that range from intimate to epic

- Sound design for film and TV that turns scenes into experiences

- Vocal tuning so your tracks shine without losing their soul

Whether you're crafting a chart-topping single, scoring a pivotal scene, or refining a vocal performance, I bring musicality, precision, and a touch of creative wit to every project. Let’s make something unforgettable.

Interview with Raymond R.

  1. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  2. A: I work across a wide range of genres — from pop and singer-songwriter to cinematic scores and R&B-infused productions. I love projects that blend emotional storytelling with strong melodic hooks, and I’m always up for exploring new sonic territory. While I’m open to almost anything, I’ll admit that heavy metal and trap aren’t typically my strong suit — I’d rather leave those to the specialists who live and breathe that sound. That said, I thrive in spaces where musicality, emotion, and clarity are key. If the goal is to make something that moves people — whether it’s a heartfelt ballad or a soaring film cue — I’m all in.

  3. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  4. A: Hard work. Talent gets you in the room, but dedication keeps you there — and I bring that mindset to every project I touch. Whether I’m writing a song, recording vocals, or fine-tuning a mix, I put in the hours to make sure the final product isn’t just good — it’s what the client is happy with.

  5. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  6. A: Emotion — first and foremost. Whether I’m writing lyrics, singing a lead, or shaping the production, I’m always chasing the feeling behind the music. I want every note to mean something, every word to land with intention. I bring a voice that carries character and clarity, piano that can whisper or roar, and a producer’s ear that knows when to elevate and when to hold back. At the end of the day, I’m not just trying to make something that sounds good — I’m trying to make something that feels unforgettable.

  7. Q: What's your typical work process?

  8. A: Honestly, every project takes on its own journey — and that’s exactly what I love about music. No two songs or scores unfold the same way. Sometimes it starts with a lyric, sometimes with a piano motif, and sometimes with a feeling the client wants to evoke. I listen closely to what the artist or director envisions, and then I dive in, letting the creative process guide me. From there, I sketch ideas quickly — melodies, textures, vocal takes — and refine them through collaboration and instinct. Whether I’m writing, recording, tuning, or designing sound, I stay focused on emotional impact and sonic clarity. My goal is always to make the final product feel inevitable, like it couldn’t have sounded any other way.

  9. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  10. A: I work out of a fully equipped home studio designed for both creative flow and professional-grade production. The space is acoustically treated for clean recordings and accurate mixing, and I’ve invested in high-quality vocal mics and preamps to capture every nuance with clarity and warmth. My setup includes a range of synths, virtual instruments, and DAW expansions that allow me to tailor the sound to each client’s unique vision — whether it’s lush cinematic textures, punchy pop production, or intimate acoustic arrangements. I’ve built my toolkit to be flexible and responsive, so no matter the genre or scope, I can deliver polished, emotionally resonant work from start to finish.

  11. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  12. A: I’m deeply inspired by the storytelling mastery of James Taylor, Billy Joel, and Elton John. Their songwriting isn’t just melodic — it’s emotionally honest, lyrically vivid, and timeless. I’ve always admired how they can paint entire worlds with just a few chords and lines. That kind of soul-baring craft is what I aim to channel in my own writing. On the production side, I’m drawn to the immersive sound design of Hans Zimmer and John Williams. Their ability to turn scenes into emotional landscapes — using texture, tension, and orchestration — has shaped how I approach music for film and TV. Whether I’m scoring a moment or tuning a vocal, I think about how sound can tell a story just as powerfully as words.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: Most often, I’m brought in to help shape the emotional and sonic identity of a project — whether that’s writing a song from scratch, laying down expressive male vocals, or designing soundscapes that elevate visual storytelling. Clients come to me when they want music that feels personal, polished, and emotionally resonant. I specialize in crafting melodies and lyrics that stick, recording piano parts that range from subtle to cinematic, and fine-tuning vocals so they shine without losing their soul.
