Interview with Teez
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My latest release Passion. I put several hours into that record until I felt it was perfect. Over the course of 8 months, I easily put over 200+ hours into working on that record. Between arrangement variations, vocal retakes, vocal processing, instrumentation variations, etc.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: My Live Album.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: This is actually my first introduction to Soundbetter.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: It depends on what kind of sound you're looking to create. I utilize Analog Lab which is a digital recreation of Analog equipment. While in other instances I'll use serum. It all depends, on a project to project basis & what the client is looking for.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: They'll love their music after I've worked on it.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Hearing the feedback from an overly satisfied client.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Whats the turnaround time for my project(s)? - That varies based on a variety of factors. How many tracks within the project, how many records within the project, do you need production, etc.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: People believe engineering is easy. It's one thing to produce a record. It's a completely different game to make that record sound good. Night & day.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Whats your reference track(s)? Who is your favorite & most inspirational musician? Whats your budget?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: You're going to get my absolute best effort forward, every time.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Ironically enough I actually was deployed to several trainings while serving in the U.S Army, in which I brought my Beats Audio Headphones, my laptop & produced out of the back of a Bradley Fighting Vehicle (Tank).
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I began my career as a nightclub DJ when I was 15 years old at local 'Teen Nights' in my area. I Djed through my teenage years, enlisted in the Military & thats when I truly took my free time to learn music production & fell in love with the process. I remember being in my barracks room, having no set-up besides my gaming chair, plugging in the AUX from my Laptop to the chair & mixing down my tracks. Ever since then, I've been engineering.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Dynamic. Depth. Spacious. Atmospheric. Low-end hitting you in the chest.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Phil Collins, Francis Starlite or Justin Vernon from Bon Iver. Their music moves me in ways no other musician can.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Take your time. Don't try to complete the process start to finish in one sitting. Let the record resonate as long as you need to, until you truly feel as though it's ready. Personally, I've held back releasing records for years, before I decided it was perfect.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Everything & anything. My skillset is multifaceted. Engineered records from many genres such as Electronic, EDM, Hip-Hop, LoFi, K-Pop, House Music, Pop, Live Band Pieces - everything.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mastering. The final product. Thats where i truly pour myself into the record.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My skillset. I've been producing music for over 10 years & professionally engineering for the last 4 years. I know what it takes technically & musically to make a record sound great.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Most importantly, referencing works that the client wishes their sound to mostly resemble. Secondary, Organization to smoothy navigate the mixing process. Thirdly, mixing/processing the individual tracks. Lastly, post production/mastering. My average turnaround time for a mixing/mastering project is 48-72 hours. I allow my ears a 24hour resting period without hearing the track, so I can return to the process refreshed for a transparent listen of the record.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I operate with a pair of Adam Audio T7V's as my primaries, along with a pair of Yamaha Audio HS5's as my secondaries. For in ear referencing I utilize my SONY MDR 7506 headphones, for specific detailing. As well as a standard pair of Beats Audio for commercial consumer reference. My DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is Ableton 10. Utilizing iZotope Ozone 8 for post-processing/mastering.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My primary inspirations musically are Francis Starlite, Benny Blanco, Cashmere Cat, Lido & DJ Snake.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Every project that I agree to engineer, I adopt as my own. The intention is simple; give the artist exactly what they want, while delivering the quality, dynamic range & spaciousness that meets industry standards.
