Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring just a love of music, a knowledge of the gear and the physics necessary to operate it and I will always try my best to understand what YOU want to end up with, what the vision is and then interpret that as best I can with the tools and know how I have in to a finished piece of art
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Typically I'll pull up the session, make sure I listen thoroughly to the rough mix, make notes, talk with the client about how well the rough represents their vision, ask for reference tracks and then start digging in, always checking in to make sure I'm going in the direction the client wants, looking to add that extra unquantifiable something that elevates it from a recording to a great record while keeping close to the clients vision for the song
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a treated and great sounding room I've been mixing out of for the last five years, it is a hybrid studio with a lot of the usual suspects when it comes to outboard (1176, 2A, Neve 1073 etc) plus some backline for any additions you may want me to make (I'm a multi instrumentalist too), and then a lot of fun pieces like contact mics, binaural heads, distortion boxes, echo chambers etc.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I love Tchad Blake's and Dave Fridmann's mixes and recording work, both experts with contrasting lo-fi and hi-fi, lots of great use of distortion and saturation. I also very much respect a lot of the work of many of the top mixers currently working like Manny Marroquin and Serban Ghenea and aspire to deliver competitive mixes in that world too
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I recently have been mixing more records and love working on giving your recordings that final lift, polish and extra little sparkle, to present them in the best light possible. I also have at various times produced records for major and indie labels, worked as a house and freelance recording engineer and toured the world mixing major artists at classic venues like the Sydney Opera House, Red Rocks and the Hollywood Bowl amongst hundreds of others
