I love writing, helping upcoming artists finish a new song or composing gripping piece to a TV brief.
To make a powerful or catchy song stand out, it has to express the artist's true voice/persona.

I hired Matt to help me come up with a melody for my timely Covid related lyrics. I had a skeleton of an idea and a rudimentary chord scheme. Within a one day turn around, Matt had made my song into a lovely tribute to the folks putting themselves in harm's way. He is a true professional and a singular talent. I hope that I have the opportunity to work with him again!

His versatility as an artist both in terms of genre and musicianship is truly unique and every time we work together he pushes his knowledge and creativity to produce something completely masterful!

Interview with Matt Banky

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Working with the most interesting new pop/ indie artist, who has these real cool small initial ideas and I am fortunate enough to be the one to help them build these ideas into full productions!

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: If you test me, ask me to do whatever you need... I will be sure to challenge myself to visualise exactly what you wanted.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: To work on an initial idea with a client until you see an amazing master song at the end!

  7. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  8. A: Do you think we could make this sound like <...> or does this sound like something we can do to this demo? My answer is always ABSOLUTELY yes, we are both creative people and our strengths lie in taking an idea and running with it to make it huge!

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: That I deal just with acoustic music. It is a popular brief of mine due to my experience, but I have actually created more top 40 sounding pop and EDM tracks for clients.

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: Be open about what you really want from your project (even if it sounds demanding) and I will mould my skill set to achieve it. If you're NOT SURE what you want, contact me with a couple ideas/questions and I'd love to discuss with you.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: Acoustic Guitar, Drum Machine, An amp, FX Pedals and Recording software.

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: I studied at music school and university in different areas, finding and developing my strengths which led me to an exclusive songwriting session with Sir Paul McCartney before starting to focus on a Songwriting career, forging connections in the industry and continuing to work with Publishers and labels like Sony EMI and Universal on briefs. I now like to deal with direct artists such as yourself to see how we can work more personally to create amazing results.

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: Anthemic melodies and hooks, often framed in lush soundscapes or driving beats.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: It is key to have natural sounding instruments somewhere in your song, in this age everything is so processed which can be AMAZING, but having even on natural, organic sound can really help connect a tune to it's audience.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: A very eclectic mix, often working on Folk, Rock, Pop or EDM in the same week. What is similar in all of these styles is they still have a message to convey. Test me with any style you need, and I would love to strive to perfect it for you.

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: Writing melodies to portray any vibe, deep and thoughtful, or catchy hook that lock in with a new tight drum track that we created.

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: This varies from project to project, depending on how much or little is needed, but I'm always sure to chat with the artist to find their message and desired vibe, then I tend to bring the experience to help carry and magnify their vision to an industry standard without losing sight of the original artist.

  27. Q: What's your typical work process?

  28. A: I firstly find what kind of emotion/ message the song needs to portray and build the track based on it's needs... ...an indie folk artist asks me for an emotive track with a big anthemic chorus? First I find the melody that hits home! ...a pop/R'n'B singer wants something with a groove right in the pocket with a choral feel? I make that laidback, tight groove then build around the emotive choral melody as the centre-piece. Every song needs to get that artist voice across!

  29. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  30. A: A mac running Logic Pro X is the basis of my setup. Glittered with a multitude of Waves, Native and Spitfire plugins and endless reams of cleared samples. My Rode and Aston Mics are my trusty companions, but I'm also lucky to use a Neumann U-47 for certain projects. A range of Fender, Gibson and Custom guitars to provide the whole tonal spectrum, Takamine acoustics and 12 Strings and stringed instruments from Mandolin right through to Violin. Taking up the most space is my fully 12 mic'd drum kit, which changeable cymbals and snare for varying attack and tone. The Yamaha Keyboards and Synths don't help the space situation either!

  31. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  32. A: As cliché as it sounds I am inspired by everything I hear, because you really honestly can take the best elements from any music in the industry and learn what makes it work so well.

  33. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  34. A: Most artists come along to me with an idea or a demo recording of the most amazing little ideas or sometimes more complete demos with fun ideas. As an artist, myself, I often tend to work with them on helping finalise the into industry standard Masters, that go on to get thousands of Spotify plays and sometimes great advert placements. It is such a pleasure to work alongside artists aspiring after the same goal as myself, and when we share the same vision for your song, we can work together to make it really shine!
