frogi is a great songwriter, and easy to work with. It was a joy to put some harp on her song Drunken Butterflies, communication worked just fine.

Interview with frogi

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I wrote a song with a friend for a project we have together that focuses on sync and licensing. We've ended up getting a good handful of placements together but this one we had for Virgin River Season 3 made me proud. The editor and director heard the song and arranged a whole additional shoot day to get drone shots because they wanted the song to go on for longer than originally planned. That was a really sweet moment for us.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Jonas Karlsson for mastering!

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: What are three reference tracks and what in them speaks to you? How does the music make you feel and how can we enhance it? As a producer, on a scale of 1-10, how much involvement would you like from me in this collaboration? 1 being small enhancements to what is already there, 10 being feedback and input on arrangement, chords, lyrics, melody, sound choices, etc.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Make sure our aesthetics align when it comes to writing and production. I can do most genres, but my real strengths lie in the cinematic, indie, pop, folk, and singer-songwriter realms.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I started out writing and singing in bands in 2012, then went to school for music production to learn how to produce myself. I worked with other producers for a long time before I felt confident enough to release my own productions. It's hard to be a female producer and I had a lot of imposter syndrome. But I found the most success I had had so far when I released my own productions, and that was very validating. Now, I write music for film/tv/trailers, my artist project frogi, other artist/podcast/audio book projects, and represent composers for placements in trailers and advertisements. And I'm very grateful to do what I do!

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: Soft and ethereal with a futurist twist.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: Justin Vernon. I would love to understand his writing process deeper and honestly just be a fly on the wall and watch him.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Lear the rules and then break them. :)

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Cinematic/trailers, indie, pop, folk, and singer-songwriter.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: My vocal production is very unique and my "signature sound." I'm a nerd for vocals!

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: I have a pretty particular aesthetic. I live in the indie/folk/singer-songwriter and cinematic side of sound. I have 10+ years of experience writing, producing, and recording and I also represent and develop composers for sync licensing, so my ear has been diligently trained for a long time.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: It depends on the project and my role, but my first step is always to have a conversation with the artist to really understand their vision. The number one thing is that whoever is leading the project feels understood and listened to.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: I have an acoustically treated home studio which is one of two in our household because my husband is a film and trailer composer, so we are always swapping gear and instruments. I use Logic Pro, and I have a variety of virtual and live instruments that I work with.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: Justin Vernon, Imogeon Heap, Phoebe Bridgers, boygenius and The Japanese House to name a few!

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: I do a lot of writing, production, and recording. I lean heavier in one direction depending on the project and what is needed - collaboration is a dance and I try to find the ways I can be as useful as possible, whether that means taking a leadership role or being a supporting piece of a bigger puzzle.
