Interview with Fabio Niehaus

  1. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  2. A: Indie-Pop with English or German lyrics.

  3. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  4. A: Listening and giving the artist the space needed to be in the pocket. Taking time and highlighting the wins!

  5. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  6. A: My love for vocal recording probably should come first - but I can set the mood with the right chords or spice it up with flipped samples. Intensive listening to what the idea of the song is - I'm not shy in throwing in some top-lines or write additional lyrics.

  7. Q: What's your typical work process?

  8. A: Listen. Ask questions. Find the right personal. Work on it until it's finished. To me every project is a one of a kind - I want to help to bring it to fruition and let the artist shine!

  9. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  10. A: I have a beautiful neutral sounding room in the center of Hamburg where I record and also edit & mix. I enjoy the fact of being in the same room as the artist. Comprised of two UA Apollos I all synths plugged in (Juno, Prophet, Peak, Kronos, Sub37), the piano ready to be recorded. A variety of vocal microphones in house - Sony, Manley, Neumann, DPA. Listening back via the Dangerous Music D-Box+ on either the KH150 or 8020s making sure the crucial details are audible. The space is perfect for a string quartet/quintet. My studio colleague is professional guitarist, so there are loads of six strings at hand - and if I can't play it, he's there.

  11. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  12. A: Right now, I'm a big fan of LIDO having a one of a kind sound and choosing collaborations wisely and incorporating his artistry. I truly believe that Jacob Collier is the Mozart of our time - being so eloquent, evocative and explorative. I grew up on Missy Elliott & D'Angelo, Georg Friedrich Handel & Johann Sebastian Bach, The Police & Queen.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: Most of the time I do projects from scratch to end with pointing the artist to the directions that their song or artistry can go. On every other day I either record vocals or string sections and play and record piano hooks and synth parts for existing songs.
