DWP Sounds on SoundBetter

As a two time Nā Hōkū Hanohano award nominated engineer/producer, David Pichard has the skills, experience, and ears to bring your production to a polished, professional finish! "Dave Pichard finds the tone in these old guitars, and records them with finesse. His work on My Aloha is outstanding!" - Peter Rowan

I have been mixing, mastering, and producing music for over 20 years. Growing up in Tallahassee, FL where I attended Florida State University for Media Production, I was a veteran of the music scene producing and engineering local bands for many years. From there I ended up working at Studio A in Juneau, Alaska and Blue Planet Sound in Honolulu, Hawaii where I have lived since 2012.

For Mixing I use Pro Tools 2018 with Dangerous Music analog summing running through my handmade Roger Foote Precision Mastering Compressor with a built in Cinemag transformer for that smooth analog sound. I use only the best plugins from Universal Audio, Fabfilter, Sound Toys, Slate and many more.

Feel free to contact with me with any questions regarding your project. I look forward to working with you!

David hired me to do some simple vocal editing for him and it was a great experience. Files were clean and easy to work with, and the music was great! Hope to work more with David in the future!

David was Awesome! I went through a lot of mixers, and even paid for a few others, and David's mix blew them out of the water. Very Responsive! I'm starting my full EP with him now.

David was amazing to work with. He really invested himself in the project and made things work for me. Being an independent artist on a minimal budget and a truncated time table he was able to deliver far beyond expectations. I will use him again on my next project.

David did a great job mixing and mastering the first song off my new album! he took some serious time to make sure everything is in place and was extremely polite and willing to adjust little details even weeks after he did the mix! this was all due to my busy touring schedule and i really appreciate that! AMAZING GUY!

David's expertise and efficiency in the studio helped make the most of my very low-budget, fast-paced recording session. After tracking, David put a lot of attention into sending me different mixes and working with my feedback, plus adding his own creative touch that I could have never imagined myself. Overall, David knows his stuff and he's also a great guy in general!

Interview with DWP Sounds

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: Know the difference between the tracking, mixing, and mastering phase and what you can realistically accomplish in each of those.

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: An acoustic guitar so I could continue to write songs, a pick to play the guitar, a spare set of Elixer strings, a lighter for building a campfire, and a machete for opening up coconuts!

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I have been involved in music/audio production since 1997. My first job out of college was working at a local CBS affiliate as an audio engineer. From there I went on to work as an audio engineer for a multi-media company that specialized in producing CD Rom content (back in the day). My job then was to edit, cleanup, and normalize hundreds of audio files each week. This was my "wax on, wax off" training and paying of some serious dues. Beyond that, I was always the guy in my bands recording our songs as well as songs for other local bands. I've always had some manner of project studio going and as of 2012 I have been working out of a commercial studio in Honolulu called Blue Planet Sound.

  7. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  8. A: I had the honor of working on Peter Rowan's last CD "My Aloha." I was the tracking engineer and got to mix 4 of the songs. It was so much fun working with this living legend, he is such a wealth of knowledge with the history of bluegrass and all things folk.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: When delivering programmed drums always include the source midi file in addition to wave/aif sound files. It opens up so many doors to creating new textures and sounds that may be more appropriate to a song than what is captured in the sound files. With the midi file, I can try out different snare sounds, ride sounds, etc or at the least enhance overhead sounds which always seem to need some help coming from programmed drums.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: I really love acoustic/organic instruments and sounds.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: Relentless persistence. Giving whatever I'm working on 100% of my skill set and attention. My love and passion for music, all aspects, help drive me to learn something new every day in order to keep improving and getting better.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: I have played bass and guitar in many different bands in the past and I also have completed a jazz guitar class from the Berklee online music school. I feel like these experiences help me better communicate with clients as we strive towards making the best decisions for what each song needs.

Been working with hip hop artists a lot more. Most recent is a project featuring illnomadic. Check it out on spotify if you like: https://open.spotify.com/track/3GzxSScp3E0UMtq5DChp66. I wrote and performed the music as well as engineered and mixed this one. Much fun!

  • Latest NewsJul 24, 2019

Just sent a 12 song project I engineered and mixed off to mastering this week for an artist located on the Big Island of Hawaii. The artist name is Ydine, a very ecclectic mix of songs from ballads, to rockers, to reggae to meditative music. It was quite a challenge wrangling all the different styles into a coherent whole but we got it done!

Been working on an EP for Jersey based musician Jason Frankel. Getting close to wrapping the last song in the project this week. Looking to add some horns so as to have some nice polish on the sound overall. There's some great stuff on this EP, look forward to sharing the finished project with the world.
