Thomas Jakob on SoundBetter

Dearest reader. You deserve a vocal recording or production that's made 'out of the box', with clear and crisp sounds. Let's make your music fly.

For years on I've been singing & producing emotional songs that have a melodramatic feel to it. I'm particularly fond of piano, as that is my main instrument; I've been playing it since I was ten.

I'm also into synthesizers, organs and then the rest: great drum sounds, great orchestral sounds, and so on. Let me know what you want and I will make it.

I can make a production for you, then I can recommend the right mix/master engineers to finish your project.

Interview with Thomas Jakob

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My Heart Is, which is my latest single, was a great song to produce. I recorded every instrument except bass guitar, and I was proud to be able to send the tracks to world class mix engineer Matt Bishop.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: My next couple of singles!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Matt Bishop is an excellent mix engineer! I fully recommend his work. I lately figured he has mixed music I grew up with.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Analog. There's just no question. There's nothing more beautiful than the warm, full sound of a real bass guitar, real Yamaha upright, or even a Moog. But that tends to be more of a purist / philosophical argument; I love using VSTs.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That I will be true on every project and 100% close to myself.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: As 100000s of others would say it's of course the creativity, but it's more than that, it's bringing a part of you you are on the inside to the professional field, which is something that nearly nobody can do or desires to do.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: People ask me if I can sing on their track. My answer is yes.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That I wanna be famous.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Where do you want the vocals to kick in? Where do you want the vocals to end? If you want me to write lyics: what should the subject be?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Don't be too keen on having your production polished like a glowing shoe. It makes the song uninteresting. It needs personality.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Yamaha upright, acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, percussion kit, shaker egg

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: It's been two years now (2021) and I'm just getting started: I've been getting more clients and more collabs over the past month and I'd like to continue on this trend.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Dreamy indie pop/rock.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Sigrid or Robbie Williams, their catchy music is incredible and it'd be amazing to work with them.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Don't be too perfect.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Indie/rock music, comprable to Arcade Fire, Keane, The National.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Recording vocals; coming up with melodies & lyrics on the spot.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I try not to make any song sound generic. I try to add a particular twist to anything I do: tens of thousands of songs are uploaded to Spotify every hour so it's crucial to share your personality. My personality comes from a blue dream world.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I sit down, load a track into Logic Pro, listen 1 time and start recording right away. For the effect I like adding the right plugins very early on in the process. That's just how I roll.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Couple of synthesizers (Yamaha, M-Audio), real electronic Hammond, dynamic mics, condenser mics, big load of premium VST's, beautiful Yamaha upright piano. I produce everything in Logic Pro.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Arcade Fire, because they don't limit themselves technically. They add elements and personality to their songs. Elements that make their music less generic and polished.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Types of work? I mostly enjoy singing and producing for a wide variety of genres. I always add my little "tricks" to make a production particular.
