Ron was fantastic to work with. His wonderful composition skills and stellar steel guitar playing meant that it was a joy for me to record on his track. He perfectly communicated what he wanted and he even sent me a chord chart to work with. I very much look forward to working with Ron again in the future.

Ron was SUPER cool to work for. He is a fellow musician and gave me room to add my own flavor to his project. He was also very communicative and helpful when I had questions. I hope we can work together again!

Interview with Ron Turner

  1. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  2. A: As a musician don't over play your instrument. Keep it simple, clean, and polished to enhance the lead artist.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Billy Nobel

  5. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  6. A: Many projects. My recent Big City country steel guitar album. Back up recording sessions with artist Lucie Marotte super star country singer in Canada. Also playing live with great gospel singers Tim Spell and Terry Gunn. Playing live and recording with Jaymes Felix former Tower Of Power and Andrea Crouch and The Disciples singer and bass player.

  7. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  8. A: Southern Gospel Steel Guitar instrumentals. I have 11 songs that I'm currently perfecting with added keyboard melody leads by Billy Nobel, Tim McGraw's keyboardist & backup vocal. Will be released early 2020.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Digital. In today's world that is the easiest way to record and the cleanest sounding.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: Complete 100% satisfaction or your money back. I want my client to be happy and contact me every time they need a steel guitar for their backup. I provide 3 free re-dos until they are happy or their money back.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: Hearing new music from artists and recording my steel guitar to enhance their song.

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: Mostly recording engineers asking what my recording software is and can I provide what they require so my track can be mixed properly. For live playing the artist may ask if I can play the same lines as the original artist recorded song so it sounds like the original.

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: That the steel guitar is a country only instrument. The steel guitar can and has been played in practically every genre of music and depending on the player can sound awesome on almost any style of music.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: What style of the steel sound are you looking for? Typically I'll ask what famous artist do they prefer the sound of the backup steel guitar on. This allows me to understand the style they prefer.

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: The band you play or sing with can make you sound great or not so great. So hire the best talent and experienced musicians that fit your style. Hire the best engineers who know how to mix it all together.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: My computer, steel guitar, amp, resonator guitar (since there may be no electricity), and direct line effects unit.

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: I have been playing pedal steel for over 40 years. Very specialty instrument so not many teachers out here in Southern California. I started out learning mostly on my own and playing Southern Gospel at church. As time went on I discovered the big Nashville players who played Scotty's Steel Guitar Convention in St. Louis every year. I became friends with Scotty and many Country Artist pro musicians and was honored to play with them and even record with some.

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: Smooth, complementing the vocal. Never over playing. The best musicians know when not to play. My style is smooth single note fills with some full chord backup. I sound best with medium to slow tempo country music, great with blues and some jazz as well.

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: Any artist that sings songs that are steel guitar or musician fill in friendly. Meaning songs that have openings where not just steel players but any musician has room to fill in between words. These types of songs flow well and show variation and how vocals and leads can complement each other.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Country, Southern Gospel, Blues, and Christian Contemporary.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Pedal Steel. Over 40 years experience.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Pedal steel backup, fills and leads to your song.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I work with studio engineers who send me their MP3 scratch track to record with typically emailed. Then I record my steel guitar track in WAV format at 44.1 sample rate minimum so it's a minimum CD quality. I can record at a higher rate if needed. I will send the engineer a dry clean track of my steel (no effects) so they can mix and add reverb etc. If I'm recording my own instrumentals I will use a blend MIDI tracks and WAV tracks that I build myself.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Small studio with Sonar Pro software for recording direct to my custom built studio recording computer, I have three steel guitars (1 MSA & 2 Sierra's), one Fender resonator, and one Peavey Power Slide guitar. Various effects and amps. I am also the sound engineer and steel guitarist at our church with a 48 channel digital recording system, including a full band with keyboards, organ, guitars, bass, and drums.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Paul Franklin, Joe Wright, Buddy Emmons, Terry Stewart, Jaymes Felix

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Live venues and studio recording sessions
