Joel M on SoundBetter

Hey! I'm a producer, artist and songwriter from Sweden. Although I mostly work with R&B and Hiphop, I am versatile and have also worked with a lot of Pop/Latin/Dancehall/Indie etc. I've collaborated with international artists such as Tayla Parx, Normani and Yxng Bane, as well as many critically acclaimed Swedish artists.

During the last years I've been based between Stockholm, Los Angeles and London, while working with amazingly talented artists, writers and producers. Really looking forward to connect with some of you creatives out there, and help you bring some new ideas to life :)

Joel is absolutely amazing. He treated my song with so much care as it was his own and was superprofessional throughout the whole process. Joel is effective, a great communicator and has a great understanding in what you want him to create.

He really did bring my vision to life and I’m definitely going to work with him again in the future. I highly recommend Joel and I can guarantee that you will be satisfied with his work.

    Easy five stars!

Me and Joel have worked in the past where we eventually would land a placement in Sweden which did very well on the charts of Spotify in our country. Exceptional work ethic with alot of patience all the way til perfection. I recommend working with Joel whether it is mixing or simply melodies provided by him.

Joel is honestly one of my favorite producers and collaborators. Not only is he incredibly skilled in the technical aspect of production, he’s also so creative and good at creating mood. Not to mention he’s a brilliant lyricist! If you get the chance to work with Joel, I highly recommend taking it, because you will get a musical and meaningful song that’s ready to release.

Interview with Joel M

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Analog is cool but I usually do more work "in the box" as I travel a lot and work on the road. And considering how unpredictable the music business can be, I really need to be able to pull a session up and finish a project anywhere and at pretty much any time. So I try not to rely too much on hardware even though I enjoy using it if it's at hand.

  3. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  4. A: Would love to work with artists like Kanye or Frank Ocean. Not only because I'm a big fan of their music, but also because I imagine them both being perfectionists that really try to push the envelope with everything they do, and I think that's a setting that could challenge you to learn and develop as a producer.

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: Björk, Jhene Aiko, Lykke Li, 40, illangelo, Boi-1Da, Bryson Tiller, Kid Cudi

  7. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  8. A: The most common type of work I do is to produce songs (either from scratch in a session or creating a track around a topline idea). But it's also pretty common for me to come in on specific parts of the process, like helping someone reharmonizing the chords of a song idea for example, or programming drums etc.

  9. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  10. A: I always enjoy reaching new or different markets and recently I've been lucky enough to have releases on major artists in the US, UK and Scandinavia. Producing and composing on Tayla Parx's album "We Need To Talk" was really fun, and aside from that I would say the EP "With You" as well as the Swedish debut "Höga Hus" on my own project, where I wrote, produced, performed, engineered, mixed, mastered everything.

  11. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  12. A: Right now I'm working on a lot of American r&b and pop projects, UK rap and afrotrap, and Swedish rap (most recent release was Z.E - Fyller that came out a few weeks ago, which has been charting on Spotify every day since) so I guess I'm really just jumping around between a bunch of very different and inspiring musical worlds at the moment.

  13. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  14. A: Marcus a.k.a Ängelsson is great, we've worked a lot together and I would definitely recommend him to anyone.

  15. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  16. A: I want my clients to be happy and for the songs to be successful, so I will always try to bring the ideas as close to their vision as possible and give any suggestions and feedback I can think of if I believe it will benefit the project.

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: Soulful R&B mixed with Scandinavian melancholy.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Very cliché but let the song be the star. If the production isn't complimenting the song itself then it doesn't really matter how sick the track is on its own, it just becomes distraction.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: Laidback, moody R&B, Urban Pop, or more alternative pop, often with pretty dark vibes and with a lot of ambient elements.

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: Attention to detail and creating a mood sonically, I really want my songs to put you in specific worlds of their own if that makes sense.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: Macbook Pro, NI Maschine, Genelecs/KRK/Yamahas, Neumann U87 (mic), Neumann TLM 103 (mic), Shure SM7B (mic), a few guitars, keyboards and a bunch of percussion.
