Interview with Lucas DeLisle

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: Elliot James! The guy is a machine!

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: digital, I need to stay mobile.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: You will always be getting my best work.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Don't ever feel like you're asking too many questions!

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I started producing in Mixcraft 5 when I was a young teen. From there, I moved into Reason 5 and then Ableton Live. After Highschool, I studied Recording at UMass Lowell where I spent a lot of time training my ears and applying it to my electronic production! Now I work at a recording studio near Boston MA, and Record/Mix/Produce Hip-Hop projects out of my house.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: When the mixing session feels like it's plateauing, pull all the faders down and "re-mix" it! This has saved me quite a few times.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: I like to work in hour-long bursts, with a 20 minute break to keep my head and my back in check. I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I need to make sure I don't stay in the zone for too long.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: I run a home studio with an Apollo Twin and a set of Kali Audio LP6 monitors. My mixing is all in the box, using a faderport for most automation, keeping the sessions quick and the cost low. For instruments, I hav a Korg minilogue and a Yamaha Reface DX-7.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: Mac Miller for his musicianship, Anderson Paak for his groove. My studio mentors Sean McLaughlin and Zach Bloomstein for their work ethic and consistently great quality.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: Typically in sessions I am the recording and mixing engineer, as well as vocal engineer. I also do production sessions based off of demos, riffs, ideas, and references.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My Apollo, My thunderbolt cable, my laptop charger, my laptop, my iLok

  23. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  24. A: I love when people get excited about a mix or a production session. It's the best feeling.

  25. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  26. A: I'm working on a solo project as "l.ucas" and also producing, mixing, and writing with a group of artists in Boston called JUNTO. We have been working together and with artists outside of the group for almost a year now, and we can't wait to share the music.
