Buck Snow on SoundBetter

7x Grammy-Award Winning Mixer

As a 7x Grammy award winner for mixing, I specialize in making big, punchy, clear and detailed mixes with lots of energy and emotion. I work very hard to understand the intention of the artist and then enhance every aspect of the music to bring out the maximum emotional impact in the end listener.

I got my start in one of the world’s top recording and mixing facilities where I worked with and learned from legendary mixers such as Bruce Swedien, Al Schmitt, Mick Guzauski, and Tim Boyle. I worked on all types of audio production and gained extensive experience doing music mixing for every genre including Pop, Rock, Metal, Hip Hop, Rap, Jazz, Swing, Folk, Orchestral and Film Music.

In addition to music mixing I have also worked for years doing 5.1 post production mixing for film, tv and advertisements which have received national airplay to millions.

Having worked in both music mixing and film mixing has honed my skills to create the best sounding mixes which will translate the clearest across any medium.

Buck was amazing, his mix took my song to a level I didn't know was possible. He's an absolute pleasure to work with (and fast!). I see now how he ended up with all these Grammy awards! Will definitely be back for my next song.

Buck is a top tier professional mix engineer, and a fantastic person to work with. He's enthusiastic and can definitely take a song and bring it to "the next level!" If you want your music to stand on the same peaks as the biggest names in music, Buck is the person you need to be talking with.

After working on a song for nearly 9 months, it was time to find the right mixing engineer. I spent a couple of hours browsing SoundBetter until I finally came across Buck's profile. I was initially impressed by his mixing abilities and sense of space, so I sent him a rough mix of my song to see if he would be willing to tackle such an ambitious project.

Long story short, I wouldn't have chosen anyone else. He delivered a final product that is indistinguishable from what you hear on the Billboard Top 100. He was quick, communicative, and very enjoyable to work with. Thank you Buck.

I’ve worked with Buck Snow for over 10 years. To call him an expert in his field is an understatement. He’s brilliant not just in creative work, but creative solutions.

Buck's seven Grammy awards say more than I ever could about his mixing skills. But he also has an incredible grasp of all aspects of music technology (hardware, software, industry trends, etc.), which opens the door to even more creative options.

I highly recommend him as someone not just to hire for your next project, but as someone to establish a long-term working relationship with.

I had Buck critique my mixes when I was a junior engineer and his pointers really helped me improve my sound staging and depth of mix. Thank you.

I've found Buck to be a wonderfully talented and easy to work with mixer. His mixes sound great and are balanced beautifully. I've experienced Buck working with many types of music and he produces a fantastic result each time. And most importantly he's a pleasure to work with.

Buck has mastered my last two singles and he has done an awesome job on both!! He knew exactly what to do, had a great ear for both projects (which were both quite different in style), and nailed it both times! He is not only extremely talented, but he was a pleasure to work with - one of the nicest and most genuine guys I know!

Buck is phenomenal to work with. Incredible knowledge, experience and insight. He is amazing at fully understanding what I as an artist am trying to achieve, my goals for a musical work of art and really nailing the attainment of that goal in the bullseye. His conceptual, vast understanding of music and audio give me huge confidence that I will get what I'm after but it goes beyond that because of Buck's expertise and ability to catch things, make excellent suggestions all due to truly understanding the artist and truly knowing his business. A consummate professional & joy to work with.

Buck's mixes are just fantastic! They are so clean, very well balanced and he makes it just sound amazing. You can hear all the instruments well separated and me as a Singer lets my voice just shine through the mixes. With 7 Grammys under his belt, we expected a lot. But we got even more than our highest expectations! He's also a real breeze to work with - fast, friendly, efficient and above all, incredibly competent!

Buck has done an absolutely phenomenal job with our album. The mixes are super clear, artistic and impactful. He made our songs sound fantastic but also come alive in a way that we hadn't even dreamed of or knew was possible. Buck brought a huge amount of knowledge, experience, aesthetic sense and creativity to the table making excellent suggestions that brought about fabulous enhancements. He was also fast, super easy and pleasant to deal with. We have absolutely zero complaints but only loads and loads of raves and accolades. Not only phenomenal mixes but way beyond our high expectations.

Buck handled all of the mixing to finish a film for me, and he went far above and beyond expectations. He smoothed and fixed any sound issues to get the film into great shape, but then also brought up ideas and points we had never considered to add extra layers of quality to the environment and characters. After seeing what he can do and the insights he provides, I would recommend Buck to anyone!

Buck is a total pro in every sense of the word. He is very thorough and meticulous with his mixing. He has a great musical sensibility and is very committed to getting a great finished product. It would be almost impossible find someone more technically savvy as well. We have done countless numbers of projects together over the years and I couldn't recommend him enough!!!

I had a critical video on a rush timeline. But some of the key videos had terrible wind noise, and a crucial VO lacked depth and had some echo. Buck fixed it all perfectly -- and overnight, no less! -- as well as leveling out the audio throughout. Ultimately, the video was played in a loud, massive room to Hollywood's elite ... and you could hear every word perfectly. Thanks, Buck Snow!

Buck recently mixed a film project I was working on. The music could be heard perfectly in every second of the film. A rare achievement, I’d say. It was a masterful blend of dialogue, sound FX and music. Each of those elements could be heard naturally in the mix, and none were getting in the way of the others.

Buck is a total pro in the studio. When we first started working together, he was the studio assistant engineer setting up the studio and running Pro Tools like an experienced space ship captain. As we continued to do projects together, his learning curve was straight up and vertical until his aesthetic sense and mixing abilities flowered. An artist and a total pro!

Interview with Buck Snow

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: I take songs that have already been recorded and edited and mix all of the elements together to create the best sounding mix possible. I bring my artistic vision and many years of mixing experience to the project to elevate it to a fully professional and radio ready sound.

  3. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  4. A: Bruce Swedien, Chris Lord-Alge, Mick Guzauski, Pharrell,

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: I am very focused on using the best equipment to get the best sound. My studio setup is constantly evolving as I test and implement new gear to achieve the best sound that I can.

  7. Q: What's your typical work process?

  8. A: To listen to what the artist has already and work out a game plan to bring it to the next level. Go through ever part of the song to ensure every detail is taken care of, and create the best sounding mix that can be done.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: I make everything sound big, bold and clear.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: To hear the potential in a piece of music and pull out every bit of energy and emotion so that it has so the greatest emotional impact is created in the audience.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Pop, rock, hip hop, film music

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Don't get bogged down in the technical aspects of a project. The engineer is here to take care of the technical aspects so the artist can concentrate on performing. A technically perfect recording with no emotional performance can never be mixed to be great. But a great emotional performance with some technical imperfections can be made into a masterpiece.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: Timbaland. I am always looking for the groove and rhythm in a piece of music, and he has the most amazing groove second-to-none.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: Big, Bold, Epic, Punchy and Clear. I strive to make every instrument big and bold and give it it's own place so that it can be heard, all to back up the main emotional point of the song.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I played guitar in high school and found that I had a lot more fun recording music than playing it. I've now dedicated the last 20 years to becoming one of the most top quality mixers.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: NU100k microphone, GML 2020 channelstrip, Pro Tools computer, Apollo x8p Interface with all UAD plugins, PMC MB2 speakers.

  25. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  26. A: Discuss your project and your artistic vision. A really good engineer will be able to understand what is important to you and adapt their style to create what is best for the project.

  27. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  28. A: What are you not satisfied about how you project currently sounds? What do you like about how it currently sounds?

  29. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  30. A: That anyone can mix. It is a highly artistic field in it's own right, which is based on some very technical knowledge. Even if you think a project sounds as good as its can get, having another person who specializes in mixing take a go at a project can elevate it to a whole new level.

  31. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  32. A: Question: "How did you make this sound so GOOD?!? I didn't think it was possible" Answer: "Its attention to every little detail which then adds up to a big difference in the overall picture".

  33. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  34. A: Enjoying good music and knowing that I am helping to create a direct line where the artist's vision is then delivered directly to the audience.

  35. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  36. A: Both. Each have their own strengths which can be used to make great sounding music.

  37. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  38. A: Dustin Atlas. He is a fantastic song writer and producer who can really bring the best performance out of a singer.
