Interview with Nikotrip
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Working on personal record
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I can't find one
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Once I was invited to play guitar at a venue with a nine people band which included cello violin, drums and a lot of other instruments.. It was a complitely inapropriate venue for live performances. No sound design. It was supposed to be a theater but it felt more like an abandoned parking lot. Also it had flouded the night before. The sound was awful there beyond any imagination. The sound engineer of the venue could not be more careless so I decided to bring my gear and set up the sound from scratch. I told the sound guy not to touch anything on the console.Just enjoy the gig I removed all the bad travelling frequences that bounced in the venue. I had to do a lot of work to get the sound right. Compression, masking of instruments e.t.c Eventually we could not believe how good the sound was during the concert and how succesfull it was despite the last nights flood and that night's heavy rain.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I see a lot of good mix and mastering experts. I would recomend M.L.I. He is very creative.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Its one has its benefits. Again its the person behind the equipment.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: A perfect mix. Nice warm singing. Inspirational creative guitar playing and good communication. I keep working a song and provide a few different mixes. I want to make sure that the client is 100% satisfied.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: To work with good musicians. I am greatfull for that.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: It is often hard to describe what you want. That is why I ask for reference tracks.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I think that it is important for a producer to be a musician as well.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I like emotional music that stands out of the rest.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I like to have a 5 minute break every 30 minutes. This way the workflow remains fresh.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Clarity, energy, depth, roundness, balanced sound
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: What gear I use. Then I describe them. Truth is that good ears matter the most. Gear comes after
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My acoustic guitar, my portable amp, a microphone , a console with effects and a camera
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been playing with various bands as a singer, guitarist or sound enginnier for more than 20 years. I have been participating in bands of different genres and had a lot of fun onstage. I have been releasing albums as a DIY musician and also licensing tracks to TV series. Mixing and mastering is something that came up in he way, around 10 years ago. It was by far the best thing for me. I could then listen to the outcome of my own creations and gave me the freedom to do pretty much whatever I wanted with my music.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Tom Yorke because he has unlimited inspiration
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rnb, soul, singer songwriter, indie, aulternative rock, house, electronic, downtempo lo fi, jazz. Prety much anything that has been made with soul
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I would like to let my reviews do the work on this. I like mixing as well as singing as well as playing guitar.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When it comes to mixing I like to listen to the song carefully to make sure that I understand what the artist has to say. I like to talk to the client before anything. Then I listen to all the tracks and start the procedure of mixing. In general terms, first I take out the bad stuff and then I bring in the good stuff.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Its not the gear. Its the person behind it.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I wound not know where to start from. I like the work of Portishead, Massive attack, Radiohead. A lot of singer songwriter acoustic bands. I believe that good sound comes primarily of good musicians.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I can not stand bad sound. I like to make the best out of raw tracks and highlight the music charachter of each song. Mixing and Mastering music is my passion.
