Interview with Pedro Zimmer
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes! I had the amazing opportunity of working with Alex Maglione. Definitely one of the best engineers from Nashville, TN.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I'm especially proud of the last song I worked on as a producer. This song is from an artist that is one of my best friends since very young, but we never were able to work together. After learning how to deal with people and how to listen, I was able to really understand his vision and the song came out amazing.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A new song for an AMAZING artist, and also a lot of editing for other producers.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Whatever makes your creativity flow (provided that the sound quality will be professional on both)
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: This song is going to be better than the last one I did, and worse than the next one I'll do.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Everyday is a new day and a new song, I get to be creative and come up with something completely different every single day.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: Can you sound like (insert producer here)? A: What is is about this sound that you like so much? How can we make it unique? Q: Can you make this cheaper? That's a lot of money... A: No, but I can refer a cheaper producer if that is what you're looking for.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I believe even producers get this wrong: this is a creative job with technical parts, not the other way around.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Why did you write this song? What's the story behind it? Is it a dancing song? If it were the soundtrack of a movie, what movie would it be?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be sure of your vision, but keep your mind open for new possibilities.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Only need two: a satellite cell phone and a GPS.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started playing the guitar when I was 9 and professionally when I was 15. At the age of 17, I moved to the United States to learn Music Production at Full Sail University. After that, I interned at the Sound Kitchen Studios and then came back to Brazil, where I have been a freelancer since then.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Positive, happy, alternative, chill...
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Justin Timberlake. I really admire his vision and the fact that he is always innovating.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: It's the ear that counts, not the gear.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I tend to work usually on songs that bring positive emotions. Happiness, inspiration...
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Listening to people.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: At first, the client's vision. After that, I'll introduce my creative ideas and concepts in order to make the song unique and innovative.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Every song is a different process, but there are some similarities... First of all, I like to have a good conversation with the client to really understand what is their vision. I'll listen to the composition, to the references and I'll start working on something new.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Demacio "Demo" Casanova, Jordan "DJ Swivel" Young, Anitta and Bruno Mars.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of my day consists in creating tracks for songs my clients bring in, following their guidelines and inspirations but also trying to find something new to bring in to the song.
