Interview with Johannes Wimmer

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I really had a great time working with The xUrbs in 2022. We recorded their Debut-EP of 5 songs, which took more than 1,5 years from first drafts to the final master, and seems like an extraordinary long time. I really wanted to give them the time and space to discover, try&error and push boundaries during the songwriting and production process. You could see everybody involved develop during this time, think about what and who they wanted to be as a musician. For quite a long time I kept back from stepping in musically and shaping their sound too soon, rather than asking questions and let the artist find the answers for themselves. Finally we were all very happy with the result!

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: The excitement of finishing a project and listening to the final result, maybe even hold it in your hands - It´s an amazing feeling.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: loudness war is over...nah.. you wish. It just depends on HOW you make it loud and still preserve dynamics and feeling!

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Edit everything, and put in time and effort to provide your tracks as good as possible. It happens way to often, that people tend to say "well this is good enough, mixing will fixing it." - Well..It does most of the time, but the longer I have to work on unnecessary clean-ups, the longer it takes for me to get in the flow of real mixing, where your song finally comes alive.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I´ve been touring Germany, Austria and Switzerland for a long time and recorded several albums with my old band. During this time I got to work with quite famous producers and mixing engineers and decided to become one of them. I´ve been producing and mixing music for more than 10 years now.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Pop/Rock, Indie & Urban for Artists. Commercials & Documentaries.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: Empathy. I believe, I´m very good at listening to my clients needs and desires, and then working towards them.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: I really like to talk to my clients about their intentions and their desires first. Each project is different and needs different treatment. As soon as we both believe that I understand what the client really hopes for, I start working swiftly.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: I work almost completely "in the box", means digitally.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: In terms of modern, german, urban artist productions I´m a big fan of KitschKrieg & Miksu MacCloud. Then Jaycen Joshua is definitely on of my biggest influences in terms of music mixing. For Indie-rock productions I really like the sound and approach of Shawn Everett, who worked a lot with bands like The War On Drugs.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: My main type of work I do is mixing for artists, as well as sound design and music compositions for documentaries & commercials.
