Working with Francisco on two of my albums was a pleasure. His tremendous skills blend creativity and professionalism seamlessly. He has an incredible ear for detail and a deep understanding of various musical genres, his ability to understand and execute my vision was impressive.

Interview with Francisco Oroz

  1. Q: What's your typical work process?

  2. A: First thing is to organize the schedule (depending on the client's deadline). If I'm mixing I first check that the files are the correct ones and organize the session while I'm getting to know the song and studying it. The rough mix is very important, I always try to get one from th client. Music is about feel, not about techniques, so it's very important to understand what the song is about. And then maximize that feeling, whether is for dancing, for singing out loud, for crying, for releasing frustrations, for enjoying the musicality of the instruments or whatever the song needs.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Yes, Matty Harris. I follow his YouTube channel which is great. I actually subscribed to Soundbetter thanks to one of his videos. Also have watched a lot of content by Yoard Nevo with the company Waves.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: I think sometimes people don't fully understand the differences between recording, mixing, mastering, editing, producing, etc. So many times the first thing I try to find out is if the client really needs producing or just recording or just mastering and not mixing.

  7. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  8. A: I'm just finishing mixing and mastering a big band album. It's not what we commonly do so it was great to go out of my comfort zone. I love learning and I learnt a lot with this project. The mixing process was so relaxing, there were amazing arrangements by the producer, with great musicians. Such a joy to mix.

  9. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  10. A: Right now where just finishing mixing and mastering a lovely big band album with classic songs. Also producing the latest album from the mexican band "Nunca Jamás".

  11. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  12. A: I work 100% ITB but I also love analog gear. I've mixed records on SSL4000 consoles and love it. In my opinion digital has come a long way and it sounds great. Mixers like Serban Ghenea have been doing it digitally for decades now with extremely great results. Each has its advantages and disadvantages but you can definitively create great music with either one.

  13. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  14. A: I guarantee 100% satisfaction by offering unlimited revisions because I truly want what's best for the song. The artist's vision must be fulfilled for me to be fully satisfied as well.

  15. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  16. A: It takes me to another dimension, really. I often compare it to meditation. When I'm working on music time passes at another speed. The studio is like a portal that takes me to another place where I find peace.

  17. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  18. A: When can you have it ready? If you need it soon I'll make it work. I often organize my projects depending on the client's deadline.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: My style blends a rich, warm low end with crystal-clear highs and a well-defined midrange. I focus on achieving a natural yet polished sound, using subtle effects and dynamic processing to enhance emotional impact, with innovative use of reverb and delay to create space and depth. My collaborative approach ensures that the artist's vision is translated into a compelling sonic experience that meets the industry standards.

  21. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  22. A: What artists do you like? What songs do you like? Are you trying to connect to the most people possible? How attached are you with the rough mix? How soon de you need it?

  23. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  24. A: Try to come with an open mind. We're working towards what we, as a collaborative team, think is best for the song. The song is the most important thing and we need to amplify its potencial through the experience and personal taste we have. The best results come from this type of projects where everyone is aiming to maximize the song's potencial to connect with the most people possible.

  25. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  26. A: Without counting the computer: a Lewitt 441 Flex mic, a Neve 1073 preamp, a Tube- Tech CL-1B compressor, an Apollo Twin interface and VSX headphones.

  27. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  28. A: I have lived from music since I was a teenager. It's my passion, my escape, my meditation, my life. I've been doing this for 34 years now.

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: Ariana Grande because I love her voice and style of music and because I think she's a nice and very talented person.

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: Record like is not going to be mixed.

  33. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  34. A: Typically with pop and rock but have worked on a variety of genres, such as rock, electronic, EDM, metal, regional mexicano, big band, ballads, and many others. You could say that I'm very versatile.

  35. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  36. A: That I'm always learning.

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: I bring technical expertise (from more than 20 years working professionally), creative vision, meticulous attention to detail, collaborative spirit, and a deep understanding of industry standards to enhance a song's clarity, balance, emotional impact, and overall listener experience.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Studio designed by the world renowned WSDG. We mostly work on our awesome ATC SCM45A and also check on the classic Yamaha NS10. We also have a Genelec 9.1.4 Dolby Atmos Certified system with 8330A's, 8320A's and a 7380A Sub. All controlled with an excellent Grace Design m908. Mainly work on Pro Tools but also have Ableton Live and Logic Pro.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Mixing Engineers: Serban Ghenea, Chris Lord-Alge, Jaycen Joshua, Bob Clearmountain, Mark "Spike" Stent, Andy Wallace. Producers: Max Martin, Robert "Mutt" Lange.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
