Joni Mitchell | Adele | Trevor Hall | MUNA | Vocals: Emotive and versatile. American Songbook, Folk, Soul, Pop. Able to convey tenderness and power. Songwriting: R&B, Pop, Folk, Jazz. Accessible and sophisticated storytelling. Medicine music is a strong suit. Fun, quick rhymes, tumbling melodies, or melancholy softness--whatever is needed.
Versatility is the name of the game! I have a background in acting, and I've learned how to emulate styles across the board. American Songbook, jazz, and early 2000s & '10s pop are my favorite, but pitch anything to me and I'll tell you honestly if I can pull it off.
I've been writing songs for over a decade, and have commissioned several over the years. My personal focus is medicine music, so if you need spiritually-centered, high-vibe lyrics, you're in the right place as well.
I aim to create songs that are lyrically unpredictable, cutting, fun, and fresh, but still easily accessible to the average listener. Timeless storytelling with enough novelty to keep up with the changing listening landscape.

Jesse’s voice digs deep and finds all the hidden gems I never knew I buried in my songwriting. But the real gems are the brilliant facets of her voice. Solid gold.

Jesse delivered a knockout performance on a very tricky vocal melody in my uptempo Rock-pop song. I especially needed a wide melodic range in the vocal performance to carry the song’s climax. Jesse was astute in her tuning into this production need and killed it with a devastating delivery for a superb pain-pleasure paradox.

A dream voice. Jesse expressed my music with devastating power, beauty and passion.
Interview with Jesse Powers
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Songs for my new Irish/Americana group, Beir Bua
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Ross Cooper--Production, Guitar Pat Worner--Production Yoed Nir--Cello/Strings
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: As long as you can keep communication open and thorough, we will get your creation exactly where you want it to be. Every moment, every note.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The feeling of the vibration of my voice as it flows through my body, and coming up with fun rhymes and lyrics to sing.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Give me as much info up front as possible, even if it's vague. Don't be afraid to use creative language to describe the mood you're aiming for. And there are never any stupid questions. I'm here to help, so use me!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Passionate, Romantic, Powerful, and Fun!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Regina Spektor, Sara Bareilles, and Tori Kelly. All three of them have distinct, unique voices, and I'd love the chance to work on blending with all three of them.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, Jazz, Folk, Soul, Singer-Songwriter
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My intuition is pretty spot-on most of the time, and when it's not, my ability to take direction comes in to save the day.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Generally I'll "sit" with a song for a day or so. I'll listen to it a few times through, then I'll take it into my daily life and begin to fill in the blanks of what it needs (lyrics, melody, harmonies, whatever). After I get the pieces together mentally, I'll take it to my home studio and lay down a demo and send it to my client. If I missed the mark on anything, we'll go back and forth to get every moment of the song feeling good and delicious. I'll take it to a local studio here in Columbus for the final recording.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Joni Mitchell, Adele, Trevor Hall, MUNA, Nahko, The Lumineers
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Soulful, emotional vocals. Stacks, harmonies. Lyric and topline writing.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
