I've worked with Gabriel in few occasions as a keyboardist and music producer. In both cases my experience was very positive, he is a very knowledgeable musician and a well mannered professional to work with. I'll definitely racomend him for your project, I'm sure you'll be pleased as I was.
Interview with Gabriel Crespo
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Well I like to say R&B Pop; however AI says my latest single is 96% Dance Pop, so I guess for now I'll go with that!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Right now I would say Bruno Mars, I would say because we share a lot of musical influences from Motown artists ranging from Michael Jackson to James Brown!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Something I've learned from some of the industry greats I've worked with is - you need to learn to separate each stage of the writing, production and mixing processes even if you're doing it all, so you don't one, second guess yourself too much and two, get overwhelmed, causing you to be stagnant on a project.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Well what role I am playing, I would say as a songwriter I am working more on Dance Pop and R&B and as an engineer more Rock, Hip- Hop and some Jazz. As a keyboardist I play a little bit of everything, from Gospel to Flamenco!
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I would say my understanding of Harmony, and Rhythm. As a Latino-American I grew up listening to a lot of different syncopated rhythms and genres and these Afro-Cuban rhythm combined with R&B, Funk and Jazz give me a lot of directions feel-wise to take a groove. As far as harmony goes, well listening to learning from the music of David Foster, Stevie Wonder and so many great Brazilian Jazz artists gives a unique ability to find those interesting non-diatonic chord substitutions to add into a song.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Nowadays I am working mainly in the box in Logic Pro X and Pro Tools for Sound Design and Mixing. I always try to use at least one piece of Analog gear even on the mix bus, just to get that final touch of warmth and harmonic saturation into the mix.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Oh wow this is a tough one, cause there's so many talented musicians, producers and engineers who inspire me. I'd have to say 3 main industry names that inspire me the most would be - David Foster, Quincy Jones and my main vocal influence El DeBarge!
