Marta on SoundBetter

I am a Romani/ Gypsy singer specializing in jazz, blues, and dance music. I trained at the most prestigious music conservatory in Prague, and I have performed professionally for more than 15 years on cruise ships and in jazz clubs throughout the world - London, Paris, Copenhagen,Berlin, Stockholm, the Caribbean, throughout Africa, etc.

I adore singing because I love reaching out to people with music and being touched by their responses, their emotions, smiles, and tears. Since my passion is my profession, I am quite fortunate. I grew up listening to jazz, r&b, the blues, and Gypsy swing. However, I also enjoy singing dance music, EDM, house, etc. And of course, traditional Gypsy/ Romani folk music will always be near and dear to me. I have been told that I have a voice reminiscent of 1940s and 50s, one that brings to mind the likes of Amy Winehouse, Ella Fitzgerald, and Diana Krall. In fact, the famous Gypsy singer, Vera Bila, said my voice would carry me to the stars. So when challenges arise, I think of her, and keep my head up. I trained at the most prestigious conservatory in Prague (KJJ & VOS Jaroslava Jezka), which is respected throughout Europe. I will bring passion, knowledge, and joy to your project. We will make it come alive together.

I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

  4. Review by Jonas

It is always a pleasure working with Marta. I want to do an entire album with her.

  5. Review by David

Marta has done several songs for me, all of them different. One was a jazz standard. The other was EDM. The final one was a rock tune, believe it or not. The point is, she nailed all of them, the first two in one take. Incredible. Never had that experience. Her years of study at Prague's most noteworthy conservatory, and her years singing on a cruise ship, building a diverse repertoire, really make for a complete artist. And she is so nice. We will do many more songs together.

You can really tell Marta loves to collaborate. She listens so well, and seems to have no ego, which is so rare in this business. She is such an excellent singer, so much control, always on pitch, and has her own style, which she can adjust to suit just almost any genre. She's damn cool. DAMN COOL!

  13. Review by Derek

Marta is so easy to work with. And she takes and uses feedback so well, and so fast. My project was quite difficult and precise, and she had it back to me the same day - perfect! Everything we discussed was present and alive. Unbelievable. This woman is unbelievable.

Interview with Marta

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: I am commonly asked to record jazz standards for bands around Europe. (I am about to move to the U.S., by the way). I am also often paid to perform at various jazz venues and festivals throughout Europe. I also specialize in traditional Gypsy/Romani music.

  3. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  4. A: I am inspired by the golden of age of jazz (Ella, Charlie Parker, Dizzy), by the blues (Bessy Smith, Billie Holiday, etc.), by Gypsy swing (Django Reinhardt, Sara Lazarus), by neo soul (Erykah Badu, Jill Scott), by retro soul (Amy Winehouse), by funk, house, reggae, and by EDM music.

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: I like to keep my recording secrets to myself, especially the mic that I use. I believe I have a special sound. I will say that I find Logic Pro X the easiest program to work with.

  7. Q: What's your typical work process?

  8. A: I like to discuss in detail what the client is looking for, the tone desired, the timing, the overall style envisioned. Once I am certain that we are on the same page, it's off to the races until my client is 100% satisfied.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: Most of all, I bring honesty, passion, and authenticity, no gimmicks, no tricks, just the fruit of years of hard work and paying my dues.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: I have been told that I have an amazing ear and that I improvise effectively with great emotion. I have also been told that I have a timeless voice, one that could also work in the 1940's and 50s.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: All types already mentioned above.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Yes, make sure you understand what your client wants before getting to work.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: If I could go back in time, I would like to sing with Ella, because she is God.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: Passionate and honest.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I have been doing this for more than 15 years. I started working professionally after graduating from my conservatory in Prague (Czech Republic). I travelled the world, singing on cruise ships and singing in jazz clubs.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: I would take my voice. I don't need a mic to sing. And I would take the people I love with me in my heart.

  25. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  26. A: Get ready to have fun and work closely together to create something magical.

  27. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  28. A: Do you have a particular style in mind? Is there a singer you hear when listening to the song that I might know? What is your envisioned completion date.

  29. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  30. A: That everything is a matter of natural talent. What I do took years of training to accomplish.

  31. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  32. A: I like to think of each of my customers as unique, so I prefer not to answer this question.

  33. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  34. A: I love creating a sense of community through music and communicating with other souls through song.

  35. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  36. A: That I will give their project/ dream 100% effort.

  37. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  40. A: Too many good people to mention. I don't want to leave anyone out.

  41. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  42. A: I am working on a retro-jazz album.

  43. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
