Mason Blu on SoundBetter

Music producer | Songwriter

With 10+ years working in the industry I help artists achieve their music vision through the power of production and writing. My journey has allowed me to develop a solid understanding of music trends and how to drive listeners' engagement.

I can help you achieve an authentic and catchy sound for your music.

If you like artists such as The Weeknd, Halsey, PVRIS, blackbear, DJ Snake, Major Lazer, Anitta, Anne Marie, and Mimi Webb then I am the producer for you.

If you don’t like these artists we probably shouldn’t work together.

Let's talk about your next project.

Interview with Mason Blu

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: In 2021 I was contacted by someone at Help4Kids, a charity organisation in Australia. They asked me to create a song for them from start to finish. Eventually, when the song was delivered they were super happy with the results and even invited me to their gala dinner event.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Some dark pop cinematic projects for sync.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Chase. He is an amazing vocalist from the US.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. I like the warm analog sound especially when applied to vocals, but at the same time I like the high fidelity digital offers.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To underpromise and overdeliver.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The diversity of the music I get to work on and the opportunities for learning new things all the time.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That great results in music happen quickly.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What is their vision for the song? How do they want it to sound? What are they struggling with at the moment that I could help them with?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Please make sure we are a music and personality match. Some of the best experiences I have had with previous clients is when I have created a bond with them and we have vibed off the music in a similar way.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Guitar, laptop, solar battery, mic and headphones.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I started off as a singer when I was 6. Later, at the age of 15, I was signed to a record label and around that time (16-17) I discovered my passion for producing. I have been doing it for nearly 10 years now.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Quirky, ethereal and full of spice.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: The Weeknd, I love his artist persona and the sound design behind his music. I am a huge fan of dark, gritty pop combined with cinematic elements as well as 80s nostalgia vibes.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Don't be afraid to experiment.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Pop

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Listening. I actively listen to the people I work with and enhance their vision that way. Another one for me would be my huge passion for learning.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Personality first and foremost. A song could be produced in a very technical and polished way but if it does not make you feel anything then it does not hit the mark for me. What I always try to add to a song is that element that separates it from other tunes and plants it in people's minds.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I normally get a brief from a client about the track they need produced. Most of the time I get sent a reference track(s) that I get inspiration from or a vocal memo with the demo topline which I use as my foundation. I then go and start shaping the skeleton of the song, starting with the drums most of the time as I am very rhythm-driven when it comes to producing and I shape my melodic instruments and fx around them.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I work in Logic Pro X. My faithful production partner is my NI Komplete keyboard as well as Focusrite Scarlett, sE Electronics x1.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Max Martin would be the biggest one ever for me. He is such a genius and I have learned so much from him. Other ones for me would be Timbaland, Jaycen Joshua and Louis Bell.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: My work includes a combination of producing, writing, and vocal recordings. I take pride in the versatility I can offer to my clients.
