Axel's Woodwind World on SoundBetter

Top notch woodwind-professional and horn section arranger. Lots of studio, live and TV-experience. Saxes Flutes Irish Whistles Clarinet Bassclarinet Duduk

I am professional studied jazz/pop-saxophonist and multiinstrumentalist based in Germany. I also play flute(s), Irish whistles (high, alto, low), Bb-clarinet, bassclarinet and duduk(s). I have recorded and arranged reeds for many gold & platinum albums including over 500 tracks for Germany's No.1 music-TV-show "Sing my Song" (Sing meinen Song). I write theatre music, arrange hornsection-parts and work with sax-effects for EDM-tracks. My studio "Woodwindroom" is specialized in recording woodwinds. This I can do on very short notice (often today) when I am not on tour. I have a bunch of pro brass horn players and different studio options at hand, so you could also get a full brass section recording for your production. This usually takes a little longer than recording woodwinds by myself. I can deliver a screaming 80s saxsolo (if you really want that), I can offer a smoky sax-melody, a fusion-jazzy sopranosax-theme, a classical flute or clarinet line, some Irish whistle jigs or even a few atmospheric Duduk bends for your film score.
I charge about 150€ for 1 instrument on 1 track including 1 review. More instruments, tracks, reviews and hornsection-arrangements will be charged according to prior agreement.
Get in touch and lets speak in detail before we start recording, so both of us can agree on style and conditions!

I’ve had the privilege of working with Axel as part of the Sing meinen Song band. His versatility with saxophone and a wide range of other woodwind instruments always brings unexpected and fresh sounds to our performances. I’m consistently impressed by how seamlessly the brass section, under his direction, integrates into the band, functioning almost like a single cohesive instrument. Axel also has a remarkable sense for crafting melodies and lines that elevate the music without ever being intrusive.

As a sound engineer when I received the tracks recorded by Axel, it was a real pleasure because Everything was there, the sound and the performance, just a little reverb was enough « et voila ».It’s a real pleasure to work with talented musicians who not only master their instruments but also Know how to record them.

Axel is a great musician. He is very dependable and plays the flute like a dream. He knew what he was doing on my song and gave many different variations for me to choose from. It was a pleasure working with him.

I worked with Axel on several productions. He wrote, arranged and recorded woodwind-music for theatre-plays that I directed. He was able to translate my ideas into music and his playing and recordings were absolutely outstanding. 5 stars out of 5.

I had the pleasure to work with Axel on so many projects over the last decade. From Jazz to pop songs, film and world music. He always delivers tasty, musical takes, he's super fast when schedules are tight and many times he would give you valuable feedback and alternative takes that might elevate your arrangement. For all pro's who appreciate the extra three percent: First call!

Axel is one of the best Woodwins-Multiinstrumentalists in germany and is maybe the most successful Pop-Sax-players in the middle of europe. I had the chance to play with him a couple of times and he always has a well thought view on songs - more like a singer-songwriter... . He always has tasteful ideas, you could pretty much give him a track and say ‚give it some colours‘ or just say nothing and he‘ll do the right thing. He has proven his ability to work on highest standards in years of playing woodwinds in the most successful tv-music-formats in germany.

Interview with Axel's Woodwind World

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: Being creative, giving some "handmade flair" to recordings

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: Listen to sample recordings first. Don't be afraid to ask horn-related questions. Not everybody is familiar with these instruments.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I grew up in a jazzy family. Started with clarinet at the age of 6. Sax at the age of 13. Became singer-songwriter-guitarist at the age of 16. Studied jazz-saxophone. Founded an artist & booking agency. Began touring & recording woodwinds on a professional level in 2004 up to now.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: in terms of brass / woodwind recordings: if you want horns to sound powerful and rich in pop-productions, the players have to play with less dynamic and louder in the studio than they would usually do when playing live. You won't get this "natural compression" with any plugin...

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: First of all: let's chat! Most important is to understand what you want. The next question is: "Who writes the hornparts?" Has an arranger written something or do you want me to come up with the arrangement or is it just a quick and easy melody that needs no sheetmusic or proper arrangement. When these questions have been answered, I would do a quick sample-recording, so we can decide about style, sound, microphone a.s.o. and after having figured that out, I would start to track and send you the files as soon as possible.

  11. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  12. A: I just finished this years season of "Sing meinen Song" (german music TV show) which will ne broadcast over the next 8 weeks.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: I am NOT a trumpet or trombone player. So I (myself) cannot offer a complete hornsection for 200€. I can offer a quick hornsection-recording with pro players on short notice though.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: Can you give me an example / track / song / snippet that you would like my performance to sound like?

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: all of you :)

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: Understanding of multiple musical genres, quick workflow, years of studio-experience

  21. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  22. A: I have been co-writing and recording the woodwind parts for Germany's No.1 TV-music-show "Sing meinen Song" which is in it's 7th season now, having released 14 albums (some of which gained platin & gold status) and more than 500 songs.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: To me good music is a mixture between heart, stomach and brain. To evoke emotions, the heart and stomach have to be triggered. This is what I love about good pop & rock music. In jazz the brain often becomes more important. I love music and artists that offer both. I like it, when it maintains some dirt. To name a few: John Scofield, Charlie Winston, Bon Iver, Regina Spektor, Beck, Tom Waits. From a production point of view, I do like to work clean and polished though, if the genre needs this.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Most of the time I record horns as overdubs when the basic tracks of a production are already done. That can mean a simple solo or melody track or a complete hornsection. Often producers or artists are not familiar with the possibilities (woodwind, brass, mixed, unison, polyphone, close miked, soft and breathy, loud with a lot overtones ...), so I often try to give examples, of what could be a good fit for the song / score. If a complete mixed brass & woodwind hornpart is desired, I can offer writing, arranging, hiring further musicians. We even can come to your studio to track the parts.

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: soulful, melodic, warm

  29. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  30. A: My room is small and very dry. No bass issues. No present room tone. For recording woodwinds in 99% I use my AEA R84 ribbon with the AEA RPQ500 ribbon preamp. Another option is my Sennheiser MD441 or my AKG 414. I can record between 44.1 - 196khz. You get raw wav-files. If desired, I offer to export my tracks with EQ & compression (using the Slate Plugins).

  31. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  32. A: Nowadays I would go 99% digital since the workflow is much better. If working analog, there must be a strict reason why and a straight workflow and no mix revisions.

  33. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  34. A: Tenorsax, my ribbon mic, interface, laptop, sunglasses

  35. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  36. A: mostly pop, rock, jazz recordings for artists/bands but also theatre and film music productions

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: melody, liveliness, warmth
