Aidan Thompson on SoundBetter

Hi, I'm Aidan. I'm a mixer and engineer.

After graduating from the University of Sheffield with a Bachelor of Music, I began as an apprentice audio engineer at Steelworks Studios in Sheffield, UK, under the Grammy-award winning songwriter Eliot Kennedy (Bryan Adams, Spice Girls, Aretha Franklin), and within a short period of time became the Chief Engineer and Studio Manager. During my time at Steelworks, I was a core member of the Artist Development team, where I helped artists find their own unique style and sound.

In 2018, Yorkshire-based indie/rock band Alvarez Kings (Warner Bros./Sire) asked me to join the band as their guitar/synths player, as well as, songwriter and producer after I worked on their 2017 single, 'Get Up and Move On.’

I left Steelworks in 2021 and relocated from the UK to Nashville, TN, where I am working out of my personal studio, as well as, several other professional recording studios around town.

When working with artists, I give my undivided attention to the music, the sound they are trying to create and the vision they see for their project.

I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

First project with Aidan and it went great. He had a killer track for me to cut my vocal on and made the process super easy with his communication on direction and a solid guide vocal. Highly recommend

Aidan has time and time again demonstrated that he is incredibly competent at what he does. I've had nothing but good experiences working with Aidan over the past two years and I couldn't recommend him enough to anyone who writes their own music and wants to take it to the next level.

Aidan is incredibly skilled, trustworthy and reliable. Over time he has become someone closely involved in the making of my first EP and I couldn’t be happier. The last song we did together is in a different genre too which just further cements his competence as a producer and mix engineer.

Another terrific project with Aidan who continues to showcase the level of professionalism that I respect and admire. Aidan is truly someone who is committed to bringing out the best in a song and he's well in tune with the artist's vision - both being the qualities of a great producer.

I've lost track of how many times I've had Aidan mix & master my songs. He's just that good, I simply use him without looking for anyone else. Great job, as always.

I've forgotten how many songs this makes Aidan has mixed for me. Maybe 10? Always a great job in any genre.

This is the second song that we did together and I’m so happy with how it turned out. Aidan is so generous with his time and takes on board all the comments, is enthusiastic and has great work ethic.

Aidan was terrific! Clear in communication, competent and friendly. Aidan has helped me to identify and craft the sound of the song and guided me through the recording session. Not to mention, I’ve learned a lot about the industry from the conversations we have had which was valuable. I’m certain we will work in the future again.

Great, great mix! Love the balance the song has, and this mix does what I great mix should - takes me into and through the song without any glitches to pull me out of it, and just drops me on the other side. I'll definitely be reaching out again.

When I was 15, I first met Aidan. He has been great to work with over the past year, and his ideas are brilliant. He always listens to my thoughts and has always got a smile on his face. Thank you, Aidan, and I look forward to the next time we work together. You're talented at what you do :)

Worked with Aidan on multiple songs for an ongoing project.
Aidans engineering is first rate and he is the most accommodating guy.
Even under a bit of time constraint pressure, his mixing and mastering is superb.
Aidan is one of the good guys and he has learned from the very best in the industry, while adding his own unique ear and talent to the mix.
I look forward to working with him again.

Interview with Aidan Thompson

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: Yes! Just let me know what you're looking for and I'll point you in the right direction.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: I'm a strong believer in both! I like to use as much analogue gear as possible when I'm tracking from tube mics to great sounding preamps through as many outboard units as I can find. I also used analogue units for mixing, but I've come to love 'in the box' now. It works better with my current lifestyle and workflow, with no audible loss.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: Whilst I was finishing university in 2015, I started engineering at Steelworks Studios in Sheffield, UK. Quickly I rose through the ranks and became the chief engineer/studio manager.

  7. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  8. A: When I was younger, my school music teacher was a huge influence in me pursuing music as a career path and a strong part of my knowledge in music, and I was 15 at the time. Fast forward eight years, and it was an honour for him to ask me to produce/mix his next studio album. If you asked him, he'd say - 'I taught him everything he knows!'.

  9. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  10. A: Production, writing and mixing is my full-time work, so this changes weekly.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: You'll enjoy the final track as I won't stop until you do! I'll always treat your music just as I would my own.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: Some artists I've worked with can be a bit shy about their creative work and even sometimes shy away about their talents. I love bringing something out in the studio the artists themselves didn't even know was possible.

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: My laptop, Apollo, Midi Keyboard, guitar and my speakers. Between them, I could still produce and make music.

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: Working as an in-house producer/engineer at a commercial studio my style is pretty expansive, I like to keep ahead of the curb and incorporate as many modern elements as possible, just as long as you live by the mantra, 'the song is king', then let that take you where it needs to go.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: I like to discuss projects and get to know the artist's vision first. I think listening to each other is crucial when trusting someone with their own art. Firstly I like to work on the song and make sure it's the best it can be. Then onto pre-production, full production then mixing and mastering.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: My workhorse rig is an Apollo X, Macbook and my guitar collection; I can travel anywhere the music takes me! Also, over the years, I have collected an extensive library of virtual instruments and samples. I think programmed elements give a contemporary edge to live instruments.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: Production, mixing and engineering. Either producing radio-ready singles from work tapes, band tracking in the studio or mixing other producers work.
