Organic Tuning, Comping & More

Riley on SoundBetter

I’m a composer, musician and singer-songwriter with 10 years’ experience in editing and a *very* sensitive ear to anything that sounds fake. Let me help you.

I will pick out a small excerpt of your song and treat it for free, then only if you like it will I do the rest. That way you have nothing to lose by trying me out.

In this modern age of production, the treatment of recordings has become “streamlined” into something thoughtlessly clinical, cold and lacking fundamental understanding of how humans are supposed to sound, with all their beautiful quirks and technical “imperfections”...

I don't like it.

In your song I will never hard-pitch anything, robotically quantise anything or suck anything dry of its timbre.

In your song I will manually and meticulously make sure every single element remains as organic as possible.

*To demonstrate this, check out my 5 minute showreel in the sample section of this page.*

Interview with Riley

  1. Q: What's your typical work process?

  2. A: I will listen as carefully as possible to really understand the quirks and workings of an individual’s performance, what makes your sound “your sound”. I will then use that understanding as a blueprint to guide my work, manually, one element at a time; always keeping the bigger picture in mind. Whether that means purposely leaving certain notes slightly “out of pitch” or choosing to use certain takes with unique “imperfections”. All for the sake of emotion and authenticity. When I’m done, I will listen back countless times over, even taking breaks to refresh my ears; just to make sure there isn’t a single thing that sounds unnatural overall.

  3. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  4. A: Simply put: Respect for your sound.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: Definitely tuning and comping.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Please don’t send me anything with effects on it, or anything with too much bleed in the background. I’d love to be able to help you, but I simply can’t work with that without distorting its sound.

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: Radiohead, The Smiths, Yoko Shimomura, Tool, Frank Sinatra, David Bowie, Amanda Palmer, Tim Minchin, TISM, Danny Elfman and many more.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: 1. That I’ll make you sound “better than you actually are”. I won’t, I’ll just make you sound more like yourself on a good day. 2. That I can “polish a turd”. If you still don’t like the finished product, there’s a chance you probably just don’t like your own sound.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: I have an obsessive idiosyncrasy for flaw-finding and subtle tinkering, this lets me indulge in that.

  15. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  16. A: I will pour all my attention into your art, never “streamlining” anything into an automated process. Even if it kills me, your sound comes first.

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: I started off as an aspiring film composer and, having been singing since I was young, inevitably realised I wanted to write songs. Through exploring both these paths, I cultivated not only a vast sense of eclecticism but also an intimate understanding of how many different kinds of instruments and vocal techniques work, becoming familiar with how they should be treated. When I begun to notice this familiarity lacking in modern production, I realised I wanted to use what I’d learned to help other artists. Overall, this has been a journey of around 10 years.
