Interview with Reinhold "Reini" Binder
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am inspired by all productions that have been created with love and passion and leave a lasting impression on the listener. I'm impressed by long-established artists like Elton John, Phil Collins, Anastasia, Joe Cocker, Tina Turner and I'm excited by current musicians like Johannes Oerding, Katy Perry, Jan Delay, Mark Forster and others.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: As much as possible digital "in the box" because of automation and recallability.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: 100% in time, 100% responding to the wishes of the customer, I do my very best to make the production successful
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Working with music-loving people and being part of a great production.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Listening to music all day is not a real job :-)
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What was the inspiration for this song? Who do you want to reach with your music? What can I contribute to the success? When is the release date?
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Because there is probably no electricity on the lonely island: A guitar, a drum kit, a parasol, coke and fries.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been in the industry for a good 30 years. My career started in the well-known BMG Ariola studios in Munich in 1993, in 2000 I opened my own studio and founded a production company. At times I also work as an engineer for other studios in the area.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: So far I've mainly worked in the fields of pop, rock, singer-songwriter and film music, with acoustic recordings and programmed music. But I'm open to all areas!
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mixing, mixing, mixing :-)
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: From a personal point of view: love, enthusiasm and creativity. From a technical point of view: warmth, weight and transparency to get a sound that satisfies my client. And if desired: additional ideas!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First of all, it is important to talk to the artist about his ideas and wishes. A simple raw mix of production is very helpful. I usually deliver a first mix or further recordings within a few days. On this basis, detailed adjustments can then be made if desired. The close customer contact and exchange of ideas is very effective.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: For studio recordings, I can fall back on a fine collection of microphones from Neumann, Sennheiser and Beyerdynamic and work with a first-class sounding analog front end from Focusrite (ISA 430, Red 1) and Urei (1178). Mixes are created on my large ProTools HDX-System, which is equipped with a variety of high-end plugins and an D-Command ES. In this way, I fully exploit the possibilities of automation and sound design and can guarantee my customers a quick reaction time for change requests. A 100Mbit network connection, a ftp-server and IP-tools such as SessionLinkPro or Mayah codec allow fast and secure data transfer or remote recording. Thanks to reliable data archiving, recalling a production that has been completed for a long time is not a problem - not even after several years.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Recording and mixing in the context of music- and tv-show publications, composing, programming, sounddesign
