Interview with Daniel Alanís

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One of the projects that I liked working on the most was the entire recording of the album 'Tinta y Tiempo' by Jorge Drexler.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am always involved in different musical projects. Records, singles, TV shows, filmscores... The variety in my work is what I like the most.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I don't have people close to me at SoundBetter, but I am convinced that there are a large number of professionals willing to work.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Excellence is in the combination.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: The moment we work together I will feel your project as mine so I can reach the result you want.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Create and work for music

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: A common doubt is: will I be able to achieve the result I am looking for? . The answer, if you are clear and the raw material is good, is always YES.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: My goal is to get where you want to go with your song. But there are no miracles and there is no mixing or mastering that can turn a 'bad' song into a good song.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What do you want to achieve and what is your objective with this job? What are your references and what is your rough mix like?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Don't be afraid to ask all your questions. Having a clear vision is important but even more so is caring about having it and asking questions.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: I think a good kit could be: Vintage Fender Jazz Bass, my laptop, Roli Seaboard, my ADAM SP-5 Headphones and a good Tidal subscription. I hope they have electricity on the island hehe

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: After graduating as a sound engineer I made the decision to move to Madrid to work in the audio industry. There I had the opportunity to start working within the music industry in one of the most charismatic and important studios in Madrid (MAPA Studios) and I gained experience as an engineer recording, mixing, producing and mastering for all types of artists and genres, both national and international level.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I like to use all the tools and knowledge I have at my fingertips and use them creatively to add to the music. You have to have all the technical knowledge to then be able to 'break the rules' and create art.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I always love working with new artists. Especially artists with a new vision or a new way of doing things. Music is variety and learning from each other is essential.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Never make the technical overshadow the spirit of the song. The song is the most important thing and we should not overproduce or get lost in things that detract from this value.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I am fortunate to work with many different genres and artists on a daily basis. I have acquired experience in more current music such as Pop, Urban, Latin, Reggaeton, EDM... And in other more classical or peculiar music such as Spanish Flamenco, Indie, Rock, Classical and world music. I am passionate about variety and learning the best of each project.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Listen and pay attention to details. From what you want to look for with your song to the more technical stuff you bring to us.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I like to work by and for the song. I think it's important to lose the main essence of the song and work on enhancing all the things that make it unique. The sound aesthetic you decide to have must add something to your work.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Mixing: My first step is to listen well to the rough mix and the references (of other artists or songs they want to approach) that you provide me. Once I understand well the aesthetics and concept you are looking for I start to sort and prepare all the tracks you have given me to make sure that nothing is missing and everything is correct. Once the 'first version' is finished, I will send you a link to listen to it so you can give me the final okay or indications if necessary. Generally I never need to do more than two revisions. As long as you are clear about what you have and what you are looking for there will be no problem to do as many revisions as you need. Mastering: First I listen to the song to make sure there are no technical problems and that it's a decent mix. After giving you the go ahead I listen to the references you have given me and start the process so I can send you a 'first version' as soon as possible. As with the mixes as long as you are sure of what you want to achieve and your starting point I will be happy to make as many revisions as you need. Production: For productions it is essential for me to have a first conversation with you where you can show me your work, your aspirations and the sound aesthetics you want to achieve. Every song and every production is a different world, so we will work together to find the best process to get you what you want.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I am fortunate to have a comfortable workspace that allows me to devote maximum effort to what I do. Combining the best of the analog and digital worlds. Big fan of ADAM AUDIO monitors, UAD audio interfaces, Neve Vintage preamps and vintage Neumann microphones.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: All the music I listen to every day inspires me in one way or another.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I am mainly a recording, mixing and mastering engineer. Being able to perform different types of jobs and in different roles has helped me a lot to train myself in each process.
