Interview with Ken Hertz

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: The more information a customer can provide the better!

  3. Q: How would you describe your style?

  4. A: Organic for the most part.

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: Adam Duritz of Counting Crows. I think he's a phenomenal singer/song writer. I would love the opportunity to work with him on a song.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Always be recording.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: Mixing, and being able to get along well with people.

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: My goal is to serve the artist and their needs/wants. I want them to be able to listen to their song and say to me "Yes that is exactly how I pictured this song would sound in my head while being recorded"

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: First I try to find out as much as I can about the artist and what direction the song should go in. I listen to any available reference tracks and from there I dive in and begin the mixing process.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: I work out of my home on a Mac computer running Pro Tools Studio.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: I owe a lot of what I know about mixing and audio production to Los Angeles producer Warren Huart and his academy Produce Like A Pro.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: The most common type of work I do is recording/ mixing and mastering.

  21. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  22. A: I love music, it's a passion of mine. What I like most about this "job" is being able to work in something I love doing. I like helping people, I love creating, telling stories. Music to me is all of those things.

  23. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  24. A: That its fairly easy lol....

  25. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  26. A: What are some of the artists that inspire you? what song do you think would be a good reference to the song you want me to work on?

  27. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  28. A: Yamaha AC3R guitar, Mac, interface, Lewitt Mic and a set of Neve 542's...ok so 6 pieces of gear lol.

  29. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  30. A: I worked on a song called Elizabeth N' Me. It's an old song, I think I recorded it with a friend of mine about 18 years ago. It's gone through many different revisions over the years but the most recent one is the one I'm most proud of. I helped write and produce the song as well as did the mixing/ mastering.

  31. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  32. A: Mixing a song from Steve Maggiora called "Through It All".

  33. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  34. A: I'm not sure if Warren Huart is on SoundBetter but he would be my first call.

  35. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  36. A: Both... Digital because it's precise and analog because it brings the magic.

  37. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  38. A: I want you to be satisfied. I want you to walk away from a project that you worked on with me feeling like "This guy gets it, he knew what I wanted and he worked hard to make it happen."
