Interview with Steve Haines (Iris Audio)
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Sasha, Guy J, Lane 8, , Yotto, Eric Prydz, Jody Wisternoff
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Primarily within the Progressive House genre, but I also can cover Trance, House and Techno.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Track engineering: - Client sends me 2 or 3 reference tracks a long with an outline of what sort of track they would like to do. - I spend some time, preparing an Ableton project, looking at some potential sounds and ideas which may be useful. - I then have a creative session with the client, either in my studio, or on Skype, I will put down ideas and they contribute with their own ideas and thoughts. - If the client would like a track to be ghost produced, I do not have a creative session with them, I go ahead and get ideas down, and email rough clips to the client to approve. - Once the client is happy with the initial version of the track, I will then go ahead with the fine tuning of the track, including further work on the sounds, and getting the track mixed and mastered. This involves them coming to me with their ideas, then I work on a project with them, usually via a remote session with Skype for a creative session, then I will get the track finished, mixed and mastered.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I like to use a simple in the box set up which enables me to work fast and efficiently, with the benefit of being portable. The centre of my studio is my Macbook Pro. I have an Ableton Push 2 as my primary controller, plus a Native Instruments M32 keyboard. I use Dynaudio LYD 7 monitors, and I use a Universal Audio Apollo Twin interface. I use a wide range of software, from Arturia, Sound Toys, Fabfilter, UAD, Native Instruments and Izotope.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I do a lot of track engineering and production work for my clients.
