Interview with Cinematic Sounds
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I recently composed and produced the countdown theme for a national election broadcast. It reached over 1 milion views online and resonated with many viewers. I’m proud because it combined emotion, history, and energy in a way that supported the broadcast without overshadowing it.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m working on a library music soundtrack for media, as well as production numbers for a major Korean theme park and ballads for Korean pop artists.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. I use analog gear for warmth and depth, and digital tools for precision and flexibility. The balance creates the best results.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To deliver music that is transparent, emotional, and crafted with the highest level of detail — always serving your story.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Creating music that connects people emotionally and becomes part of their memories.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: They often ask: “How fast can you deliver?” My answer: “I can work quickly, but quality and emotional depth always come first — and I make sure you get both.”
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That composing is just about writing notes. In reality, it’s about translating complex emotions into sound and guiding the listener’s journey.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What emotions do you want the audience to feel? Do you have any references? What’s the most important element of your story or message?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for someone who not only delivers a polished track, but also understands storytelling and emotion. Music is not just sound — it’s connection.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A piano, Genelec monitors, Apollo x6, my WA-47 tube mic, and my favorite string library.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been a composer and producer for over 15 years, starting from new-age piano albums, then moving into TV dramas, documentaries, and film. Along the way, I also worked as a music director in broadcasting, which gave me deep industry experience.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Transparent, cinematic, and emotional. My goal is to make music that feels inevitable to the story it accompanies.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with artists like Paul Kim or Sung Si-kyung, whose voices carry emotional weight and would complement my style of arrangement and storytelling.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always think in terms of space. Reverb isn’t just an effect — it’s a way to place instruments in a believable world. Less is often more when the arrangement itself is strong.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Cinematic orchestral, drama/film scores, ballads, pop crossovers, and production numbers that need emotional depth with modern polish.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Arranging and orchestration — especially strings and brass — combined with transparent mixing that lets every detail shine.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Clarity, emotion, and a cinematic quality. My strength is in shaping arrangements that elevate the storytelling without overshadowing it.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by discussing the emotional goal with the client, then sketch harmonic and melodic ideas. Once the core theme is approved, I expand into orchestration, sound design, and rhythm. Mixing and mastering are carefully refined for transparency and impact.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is a fully treated environment with Genelec “The Ones” monitors, subwoofer, Apollo x6 interface with external clock, premium outboard preamps and compressors, and an extensive library of virtual instruments. I balance analog warmth with digital precision for maximum clarity.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by composers like Ryuichi Sakamoto, Joe Hisaishi, and Thomas Newman for their ability to translate emotion into music, and by producers who bring transparency and detail to sound, such as Quincy Jones and Trevor Horn.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I compose and produce original music for TV dramas, documentaries, films, and commercial projects. My work often blends orchestral scoring with modern pop and cinematic styles, tailored to the emotional narrative of each project.
