Phenomenal producer. I've worked with him for almost 2 years now and he has delivered above and beyond every time. He has single handedly helped me develop my sound and craft to bring me to the next level. Definitely the kind of producer you want to transcend your music and separate yourself from the rest of the pack.
Interview with MISTRO
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I have a very bright, colorful, and soulful sound. My EDM songs are usually very energetic, and my chill songs carry lots of energy as well, but in a more calming, melodic demeanor.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: The first artist that comes to my mind is Martin Garrix, because I've always been a fan of his and wanted to work with him. He continues to inspire me as a producer. The only Singer/Song-writer artist I can think of is Kehlani, I can not stop listening to her music. She has such a compelling voice. I love her writing, her phrasing, her riffs and runs.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: My biggest music production tip would be to get clarity on what you're creating first. I spent years producing amazing ideas with poor sound selection, sound design, and mixing skills. One day, I realized that great sound design created great sounds, great sounds created great sonics, great sonics made room for a better mix, and leveling often bridges the gap between what's in the DAW and what's in your head. A huge part of producing is knowing the sound you want before creating it. Go into your DAW with a map in your head. If you have an idea first, most of the time, you'll end up with something much more expansive and elevated, beyond what you'd expect.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: These days I work on a lot of Electronic House music and R&B. My new sound has a soulful Nu-disco feel. However, I'm versatile; I love creating within many subgenres in electronic music. In the recent past, I've produced afrobeats, trap, pop, future bass, dance-hall, and hip-hop tracks
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is melody. Melodies flow through me very easily. Before music production, I was into classical piano. Melodies evoke a lot of emotion and passion for me.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When I work with my clients, I start by listening to the reference tracks they send. I'll add the songs to a playlist and then listen to the songs on repeat. I listen to the songs a couple of times just to enjoy and feel the music. After feeling the songs out, I'll listen to them and pay attention to the arrangement, the elements, the sound selection, the mix, the vocals, etc. After listening, I open a blank session in FL Studio, and I get ideas down. I avoid listening to reference tracks while I'm getting my ideas down. Whether I'm working on music for clients or artists, or myself, I love melodies, so I start with chords. Sometimes I'll sit at the keyboard and play around; other times I'll pencil the notes in. The chords I write usually inspire a melody. After I get my melody down, I move notes around until things sound cohesive. I tend to create basslines before I create drums in most cases. However, sometimes I'm excited to create the drums after finding a good melody; it really depends on what I hear first. Once I get all of my instrumentation and sounds down, I like to mix as I produce. For arrangements, I always create the hook or drop first, then the verse, pre-chorus, intro, outro, and lastly the bridge. I'll format everything depending on the vocal, genre, and references. I then give the song a detailed mix. Once I'm happy with my mix, I export the song for mastering, and then I give the song a detailed master. Side note: I take occasional breaks. I do my best not to rush through songs. I like to immerse myself in every step of my creative process. If I'm listening to a reference track, I'll wait a few hours or even a day before opening my DAW to create. I tend to create fast, so before I get to the mixing stage, I step away from it so I can work on the song with fresh, unbiased ears.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I currently use a Samsung Galaxy Book3 Pro 16-inch with a Samsung curved monitor. To listen, I use Beyer Dynamic DT 990 Pro open-back headphones and Adam Audio A7x white limited editions.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: When I first began producing, I wanted to learn how to produce every genre of music. Timbaland was one of my first inspirations for creating hip-hop; then, naturally, I began producing Pop and EDM. I listened to tracks by Martin Garrix, Afrojack, and Skrillex, and they inspired me to take my music to a new level.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: For my clients, I produce a lot of tracks based on the reference tracks they send me, then I do post-production on the vocals they send me, and then I create a mix and a final master.
