Interview with Crown Studios
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: When you're thinking about a song's production it's so important to think about the way all the elements mix together. A song that's produced really well is super easy to mix and will always translate better to you're live show as well!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip Hop, Rock and Soul Pop mostly! But lately we've been doing more mixing for electronic producers as well.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Production and Mixing (We're usually thinking about how a mix will come together while we're working on production!)
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: This really depends on what each artist's needs are! In general, the most important part of the day is figuring out what we want for lunch (Fondren has so many great options!)
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: The emphasis at Crown is to really hone in on the right vibes for each artist that works with us. We tried to be laid back with the record making process. So much of the artist's career is lived out in high intensity situations (live shows, interviews, real life, netflix binge cliff hangers). With this in mind we really try to offer a place to unplug from all the noise around us so we can really focus on the important part: the music.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Too many to count! Jack Joseph Puig, Greg Wells, Jaquire King, Dave Pensado, Andrew Welch, Andy Wallace, Al Schmidt, Tchad Blake
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Probably mixing! But it really depends on each project; if it's a hip hop/RnB record or a more modern styled pop record, there tends to be a lot of programed elements. In these cases its important to have a really good recording of the vocals, but a lot of the other sounds are being made artificially, so the recording process is minimal. If we're doing a rock or singer songwriter record, though, we will definitely want to make full use of the studio's recording capabilities too!
