Interview with Colin Childs Mixing

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: Currently I'm running a Mac Pro Retina utilizing a solid state drive for maximum performance. I run two separate interfaces that input/output my outboard preamps, compressors, and eqs from Focusrite, Presonus, DBX, Alesis, Behringer, and Tascam. My monitoring systems consists of multiple reference speakers from Studio Yamaha's to reference 3-way Pioneers with a power packed stereo setup and 2 10-inch sub woofers. This allows me to switch between different referencing devices and hear the full frequency spectrum to insure your mix is tight from top to bottom on any device or platform. My 3rd optional device is of a course a small pair of Alesis near fields. The Daw's I currently use are Studio One and Logic Pro X. I use a variety of waves plugins from the CLA Signature pack to the Platinum Bundle. I am also an enthusiast of Slate Digital Software and a subscribed member to the all access pass.

  3. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  4. A: My inspirations and sound are derived from mainly 90's rock/alternative into the 2000's era also including genres of Hip-hop and Rap. Bands such as Nirvana, Creed, Korn, Metallica, Godsmack, Alice in Chains, etc. And artists including Dr. Dre, Eminem, Nelly. I've shaped my craft and skill over the years from inspirations such as Joe Basseri, Chris Lord-Alge, Dave Pensado. My overall influence and sound has been shaped by both music I grew up listening to and the current music we hear today. It's a never ending process of learning and I still continue to steal ideas from other engineers and implement them into my own process.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I've been mixing and mastering for 6 years professionally but have been unknowingly doing it since I started recording my own bands at the age of 13. I developed most of my knowledge on my own through magazines, blogs, youtube videos and basically playing and listening to tons of music in all genres. A lot of the skills I acquired came through trial and error. I did however learn a little bit during my 4 years earning a bachelors in music technology.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: My style is YOUR style. I tend to take what a client has told me and really listen to their samples. I'm well rounded when it comes to mixing so I have many styles that I can replicate and that's what I enjoy most about my work. I take YOUR style and I find a way to make it even better!

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: Although I've worked with many genres and have experience in nearly all sides of the industry, I work on a lot of hip-hop music. Up and coming r&b or rap artists tend to be the most frequent group of artists trying to make a name for themselves, not to mention the endless amount of readily available hip-hop instrumentals.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: My strongest skill is my client to engineer relationship. I want to work with the client and be on the same page so that YOU get the result YOU want.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: In a song I can bring a wide and "real life" feel in the mix. I tend to be more meticulous than to "over do" things as a lot of engineers have trouble with.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: My typical work process includes taking an edited dry mix and leveling the low end. After I feel the low end is in a sweet spot I work in all the instruments around that while strategically using subtractive equalization and compression on particular instruments that I feel need this adjustment. I take a professional approach in balancing and widening the mix while using bus's to organize my work. I tend to use multiband compression and dynamic equalization in a final mix bus to put the final touch on a mix. When I finish a mix and a client is happy, I begin my mastering process.
