George Karanikolos on SoundBetter

Hi, my name is George Karanikolos and I am a record producer and sound engineer. I specialise in all aspects of music production; from recording to mixing and mastering. I am always looking for cool and fun projects to be involved with, offering my personal taste and expertise. Feel free to send a message so we can discuss about your next project.

Born and raised in Greece but having spent much of my adult life in the United Kingdom, my background in music and production is quite diverse.

I started studying classical guitar at the age of 13 and I also picked up the piano and advanced music theory a few years later. After graduating from high school, I took a gap year where I taught the guitar to young students of a local conservatory. The following year, I moved to the United Kingdom where I commenced studies in music technology, popular music and the music industry. I have since been primarily working as a recording, mixing and mastering engineer and a music business consultant.

Working together we can record, mix and master your project to a high standard. We can work in-person, if you so desire, and I am happy to travel to a commercial studio near you, if budget permits. Nevertheless, we can easily collaborate over the Internet. I am a Certified Avid Pro Tools User but I also use Logic Pro and Cubase extensively. I mix and master every project 'in the box', utilising the best plug-ins from an array of reputable developers.

I am also competent in audio post-production and have experience mixing sound-to-video in stereo as well as surround/immersive audio formats.

Interview with George Karanikolos

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I've been taking music lessons since I was a teenager and developed an interest in music technology and sound engineering, which I then studied after completing high school. I've been working in audio for over a decade.

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: People oftentimes think engineers can 'fix it in the mix'; something that is rarely true. It is usually very hard to salvage a bad performance or a bad recording. Nothing beats musicianship and skill.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: I mostly ask my clients questions about their budget and how they intend to spend it, as well as how they plan to distribute their music after the production has finished.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: My advice to anyone looking to hire a provider is to work with someone who really appreciates the genre you're in and who is an easy-going and easy-to-work-with person.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: I work on a variety of genres ranging from rock to blues, jazz to folk and classical to world music.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: My 'promise' to my clients is that I will try, to the best of my ability, to deliver the best possible end result.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: I truly enjoy the fact that I get to meet and collaborate with different people from diverse backgrounds. It's never a dull day in the studio!

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: I would describe my style as relaxed and laid-back but with an emphasis on getting the most out of every session.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: I mostly bring a fresh perspective and a desire to make the song the best it can be.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: When I'm not in a commercial facility, I work out of my personal project studio. I prefer Pro Tools as my DAW of choice but I also use Logic Pro and Cubase every now and then. I believe monitoring is crucial so I am using studio monitors by Focal and Event as well as headphones by Beyerdynamic. I also have a few outboard preamps, microphones, DI boxes, a Ludwig drum kit with Paiste cymbals and a bunch of guitars kicking about.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: I usually record, mix and master my clients' songs but it truly depends on the project.
