Interview with Simon Jacobsson

  1. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  2. A: They usually ask me what my delivery time is. My answer is always 2 weeks from start to finish.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: I produced and co-wrote AOA's song Super Duper. It was written on a sunny day in October with no other intentions than making a great K-pop song for the mentioned artist. It then ended up being cut on their EP as the second song of it.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: I'm working on multiple pop acts for labels as well as my clients.

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: Malin Johansson, she's an amazing topliner and vocalist. Always has a super professional approach towards her clients.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Both, why choose one.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: That I will always do what's best for the artists song.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: Making music and producing a song together for a final product.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That a producer is not a musician.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I always start by asking what their goal is for the project, what type of sound their going for and what their deadline is.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be authentic to yourself and do the music that you truly love, never try to be like someone else. People will notice and appreciate your music for it.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My Macbook Pro, Apogee Duet, my microphone, guitar and midi keyboard.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started as a drummer when I was around 10. Picked up guitar a few years later as well as some basic piano skills. Years after I was the lead singer, top liner and guitar player in a band. We decided to do an EP which I became the producer for. I instantly fell in love with the production side of music and got totally obsessed with it. I then decided that I wanted to be a professional music producer and songwriter for other artists and have since then, got signed by a Swedish publisher, had big releases with artists in Korea, The Netherlands, USA as well as Sweden. I've also produced lots of songs for indie artists and clients online.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: A blend of electronic sounds and organic blended together into a modern sound.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Julia Michaels, her vocals are amazing and she has such a great feeling for melodies and lyrics.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: To remember that the vocals are most likely the most important element in a pop song, and deserves to be treated that way.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Different kinds of pop music, from epic ballads to EDM songs.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Production and topline melodies.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: My gutfeeling and ear for a radio ready pop song.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: The most common way of working is that my client sends me over an demo acapella of the song which I then produce a track around. Once the client has recorded the final vocals, I will then comp, edit and tune all the vocals as well as mix and master everything for a release ready product.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a acoustically treated room with a pair of Yamaha HS8 reference monitors, multiple headphones, an Apogee Duet 2 interface, a Stellar CM5 tube microphone in a treated vocal booth as well as multiple guitars and a keyboard.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Benny Blanco, Max Martin, Loote and the Wolf Cousins.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I mainly work with clients who are into pop music of different styles.
