Interview with Alvin Anthony
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am proud to work on all of the records I take part in, otherwise I wouldn't waste my time. I'm especially proud of the records made through my publisher as these are on their way to being released through some standout labels.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: So much, two productions, four songs and one song as a vocalist.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Alex Gutarts
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: The future is now, digital
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise professional quality, I will meet deadlines and I am a positive collaborator.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I get to play music every day of my life :)
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: There are so many questions! Ask me something and I'll let you know!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: People don't realize that once I work with them, I try and look out for opportunities for them in my extensive network.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I like to know what your goals are in whatever lane you are in in music. The more I know about where you'd like to go the better I can help steer you in the right direction.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: The more you know what you are looking for the better I can help you achieve your vision.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I would take my laptop, a midi keyboard, a usb microphone, headphones and a guitar.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: When I was really young, I would write songs from my three sisters to sing and perform to our parents and extended family. Eventually that turned into playing almost every instrument in various rock bands during high school and college. I went to Dubspot Music Production School to get a solid foundation in record making. After producing and writing songs independently for a number of years, I was introduced to the publisher I work with today!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is laid-back, powerful and resonant.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would like to work with Bruno Mars. I think he and his team makes the most interesting music today.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: It's not about using 100 different plug-ins on an insert. It's about choosing the right sounds from the start and selectively using plug-ins to achieve a vision.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I typically work on EDM, Pop and RnB records as a producer and songwriter. I also make hip-hop beats, but I don't usually write hip-hop songs.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is my understanding of what makes a record commercially viable. I set the bar high and understand what works and what doesn't, without getting too cold and hard about business.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring authenticity, originality and the creative spark. I eat, sleep and breath music and always look to make music I'm so proud I created or that I've never heard before!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When I'm creating an instrumental for a client, I love reference tracks to get an idea for the kind of track they are looking for. I conceive a vision of the record and start finding those sounds and composing/ arranging. When I am writing a song for a client, I first try and understand what type of feel they are going for, then I search my memory for similar experiences and write authentically from those feelings. The process is a little different when I'm writing a song with the artist in person. In person, I try and bring out from the artist what they are going through.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use Logic X as my DAW and have all the best software (Waves Bundle, FabFilter, Sonnox, Sylenth1, Komplete Ultimate 10, iZotope Alloy and Ozone to name some). My monitor speakers are the Yamaha HS8s and my go to microphone is a Blue Spark.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm most inspired by teams like Max Martin, The Shmeezingtons, N.E.R.D., just to name a few
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I am a producer/ songwriter signed to Big Management/ Contagious Publishing. At Big and independently I excel at writing topline to instrumentals and creating instrumentals for artists and songwriters to write topline to!
